Default Auto or manual?

I have also posted on the should I buy thread about a 1998 auto. Figured that if I had a question about a specific feature it be best to go to that section.

I recently also found a 99 ti with a manual.

My question is will the auto easily handle the the power from the ti when I supercharge it? I read on Understeer.com from under the customer cars area about the ti that

"In their place went a Downing Atlanta supercharger! Good thing we bolted on that M3 clutch."

Was thinking if this was just a coincidence or if the stock transmissions just cant handle the power from a supercharged engine?

I am not very good with a manual(very limited experience). Is the auto as bad as everyone says or are people just talking about the feel when driving?

I am just trying to make an informed decission before buying, so any help would be beneficial thank you.

I think the auto is actually rated to handle more torque. The manual is a Getrag S5D 250G and the auto is a GM A4S 270(310)R. I believe the 3 digit number is the torque rating for the trasmission. So the manual is rated for 250NM, and the auto is rated for either 270NM (9/95+) or 310NM (before 9/95).

The limiting factor for the manual transmission is not only the transmission limit of 250NM, but the diameter of the clutch disc. The 318 cars have a 215mm clutch, the 6 cylinder cars have 228mm clutches, and the M3's have 240mm clutches. I think it's possible to bolt up an M3 flywheel and clutch to the 318 motors though to handle the extra power. Someone on here can confirm that though. Also, an 328/M3 "beefed up" manual transmission can be fitted to the 318 cars to handle any extra power.

So a stock 318ti auto transmission shoudn't have a problem with the motor being supercharged?

Also do you know if the auto has any driving woes? I alwats hear people complaining(in general not just on here) about autos being crappy, are they just talking about cause of the lack of involvement in performance, or a real reason with the 318 auto?

Default Having a Choice

Pick the manual.... always! IMO automatics are boring to drive always react slower than a manual, you don't have to wait for a downshift. You will learn very quickly how to drive a manual. Enjoy

People have told me I will get the hang of a manual.

But my real question which was mostly answered by the first reply was if the stock manual could handle the power from a supercharged ti.
I don't know whether the numbers he gave about torque are atw or at the transmission(i assume at tranny) But I do not know the amount of torque a supercharged makes at the trans, just the rwhp and trq(and only from posted dynos which seem to be below 200).

I dont want to buy the car, the supercharger, and other things to improve performance, only for me to ruin the trans under the power and have to buy a new one.

His post seems to show the auto has a higher threshold for power.

I know to some it would be an easy choice, but mine is a decision of money, I almost have enough for a supercharger(takes me along time to gather money) So I want to make a decision that will be economicly sound.(is that the right word for money efficient?)

I have the auto sport shift and I wish every single day that I had a manual. Get the manual. the auto holds gears, has a crappy gear ratio, so you never have that one gear you're looking for, and some other problems. If it's an issue of whether or not you can drive a stick, learn. You'll be happier.
