The cluster has 3 parts.
Front clear cover
Gauges
Electronics

They all come apart.
I used the gauges of the original cluster along with parts of the replacement cluster.

My gas gauge has the same intermittent problem your water temp has. It work when I smack the dash, and if I hit the wrong bump, it shuts off again.

What part was bad for yours? Since you kept the original gauges, I'm guessing it was the electronics that was bad on yours? How did you keep the mileage correct without illuminating the tamper dot?

I have a 01/96 build car, which was a early 1996 model car with OBDII.

I guess it is either time to start looking at wiring diagrams for the cluster, or time to start scouring eBay for a cheap cluster that works.

I had multiple problems.
First problem was that none of the warning lights worked.
Replaced all the bulbs, still no warning lights.

Replaced the cluster.

A few days later I noticed the water temp gauge not working until I drove a bit. Or hit the dash.

Swapped just the gauges.

Read posts 11 and 18 above.
The procedure will take the higher mileage.

I'm going to bump this thread as I have a few questions on how the cluster operates.

When I turn my key to position 2 but don't start the car, I get all my lights illuminated.

When I go and pull my parking brake with the car on, I get no lights telling me that it is engaged. Does the ti have a dummy light to tell me the parking brake is engaged or am I just spoiled from my new BMW's?

The switch on the lever is probably bad.

I think I'm stupid. I was looking at the brake pad light and now noticed there is a separate light that says PARK for the parking brake. That light isn't lit so I think the bulb is bad.

What type of bulb do I need?

It's the same bulb as the others so you can swap them to test.

Dealer bulb unfortunately...

Default cluster dark

all warning lights went off on cluster, tach speedo, temp gas guage all ok?
had lock issue and removed cluster to check bulbs, saw a spark at one point so I disconnected battery.

All warning guages on bottom off now, srs was always on now its not, test sequence NG either anymore

Any ideas would be appreciated

Did I fry it or just a bad fuse or trace?
