Shouldn't more lights be on? Also the locking mechanism of the small connector on the left side partially crumbled. I hate to silicone it. Anyone good reading wiring schematics to figure out the connector? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org Last edited by 1996 328ti; 09-24-2013 at 12:27 PM. | | | 09-24-2013, 12:28 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I've been thinking about this more. Can I swap my 96 6 cylinder cluster just to see if the lights come one? A tech told me it could be an ECU problem in that it's not going into self-test mode. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-26-2013, 05:15 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I pulled out the cluster again to inspect traces. I don't see anything common to the lights out. I pulled the ECU since I'm not getting a CEL fault. I was looking for corrosion. The ECU looks good. Both sides of the board. There is some rust under the battery compartment though. Could still be a bad cluster. Could be a bad ECU. Could be anything. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-27-2013, 01:41 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Anyone know if I can swap my 1996 6 cylinder cluster for my 95 just to test? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-27-2013, 02:07 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | It should work. I don't see any differences. __________________ Sean 1995 Active | | | 09-27-2013, 02:16 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by teetime4one It should work. If that doesn't solve it I think it might be the ECU. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-28-2013, 12:14 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Swapped clusters and sure enough, my 95 cluster is bad. Also noticed my ABS light on. Once I replace the cluster, that's the next thing to fix. Bad news is I cracked the glass of my 96 cluster. I should have removed the steering wheel. I was too lazy fighting daylight. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-28-2013, 12:30 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Can I pull the coding plug from one cluster to another in a 95? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-28-2013, 11:00 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Bremerhaven, Germany Posts: 977 | If the cluster has one. I think coding plugs, however, are from 9/96 onward. | | | 09-29-2013, 12:42 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by John Firestone If the cluster has one. The cable grounds another pin. Last edited by John Firestone; 10-13-2013 at 09:46 AM. Most likely it was because I swapped a 96 cluster. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-29-2013, 03:43 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Bremerhaven, Germany Posts: 977 | As you can read (I hope) from my scribbling, I was surprised by the shortness of the adapter lead and the damage its insulation displacement connector did to the wire. It was part of a warranty repair. If I were to do it, I would buy just the wired contact and splice it in using solder and heat shrink, perhaps with a little added wire. | | | 09-29-2013, 04:08 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by John Firestone As you can read (I hope) from my scribbling, I was surprised by the shortness of the adapter lead and the damage its insulation displacement connector did to the wire. I think that's the problem with the passenger seat mat. Which reminds me. I also have a SRS fault. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 10-03-2013, 01:58 AM | #15 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | You got good advice so far with regards to the cluster. As to the passenger matt, I did the little resistor trick several years ago and it has been working like a charm. I might have the information on it (I SHOULD have it) and if I do I'll post it up. I probably found it here, but it may have been another BMW site. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
