Default oi leak

I changed my oil today. Getting under the car, I was like WTF? oil every where. I inspected the area around the oil pan and I am pretty positve it is the oil pan's gasket that failed. Does any body know how much this would cost, and is it a possible DIY job? Any comment would be appreciated.

I've got the same problem and I was quoted something like $340 for a new gasket with oil change at an independant BMW shop.

But..... After digging around, I'm beginning to think that it's NOT the oil pan gasket, but rather the oil filter housing gasket. (where it mates to the block) I found a small puddle of oil fairly high up on the engine and I think it only could get there if the housing gasket failed. My leak is heavily concentrated at the front end of the engine BTW.

I do think it (pan gasket) can be a DIY job, and I was planning on doing it myself. You will need to source an engine lift, so I was planning on getting a cheap $50 one that just spans the engine compartment. There are instructions in the Bentley manual.

why do you need an engine lift?
