Do you mean 10w-40? It really depends on the temperature outside. I changed mine last sunday and used 5w-30 because it's heading into winter time. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 12-17-2006, 11:28 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: SoCal Posts: 549 | I like Mobil1 0w-40. I have heard it is a very good oil to use. But some people are skeptical about it. I might go ahead and try it next oil change. __________________ | | | 12-18-2006, 01:04 AM | #5 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | After doing some research i would not put this oil in your car unless you live in Alaska or Antartica. It is for Arctic extreme cold weather only, not meant for warm weather. You can put whatever oil you want in your car but if you put in a weight that is meant for colder temperatures and it's a warm climate where you are you will do some damage to your engine. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 12-18-2006, 02:09 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | I use Mobil 0w-40 year-round. It's one of a few oils that's approved by BMW. It meets their "LongLife 01" standard. I've been getting it at $4.75 lately at Mills Fleet Farm. | | | 12-18-2006, 02:14 AM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: raleigh Posts: 16 | But do you know what is the max temp for this oil? | | | 12-18-2006, 02:26 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: Walnut Creek, CA Posts: 642 | Quote: Originally Posted by Tyler After doing some research i would not put this oil in your car unless you live in Alaska or Antartica. Multigrade oils typically begin as base oils, such as 10W. Then viscosity-index modifiers (polymers) are added in an effort to stabilize the viscosity. This allows a 10W40 oil to flow like a 10W at cold temperatures and a 40W at higher temperatures. In other words, multigrade oils are formulated to pass viscosity tests across a range of weights. For example, 10W30 meets the requirements for 10-weight at cold temperatures and 30-weight at high temps. The "W" means winter, not weight. So, infact, 0W-40, is a very good oil in my opinion. Flows really well at start up and protects well at operating temperature. Pretty much everything you could ask for in an oil. You are right that temperature has everything to do with the flow of oil, but in this case it's hard to argue that 0W-40 will harm your engine. __________________ '95 330ti CS w/sr delete, S50USB30, cams, 24# inj, Conforti SW, Euro HFM, Samco Silicone Intake Boot, BBTB, Euro Oil Cooler, JTD CAI Duct, RE DMS exhaust, RE Tranny mounts, CF Valve Cover, LTW flywheel/Kevlar sprung hub clutch, RE SSK, 3.46 Finned LSD (M6) , M3 tranny, Brembos, RE Wheel Studs, SS brake/clutch lines, CF interior, Rear Headrest retrofit, Tilt Steering retrofit, 13.5 lb DynaBatt in rear, LED interior/footwell lights, ZKW HID, Headlight Aim Control, Rear fog light w/cluster indicator, CF 3 Aux gauge pod, BMW Traffic Pro/Alpine MP3-CD Changer, Staggered LTW wheels, '95 M3 steering rack, VIS CF Hood, M3 LTW Strut Bar, TCK SA coilovers, Red LTW Motorsport Seatbelts, OEM Fire Extinguisher, Z8 Starter button, Auto dim rear view mirror w/ Homelink/Compass, PDC, Rear Sun Shade, Euro Gauge Cluster w/oil temp/shift light , Headlight Washers, "Motorsport" Door Handles, CF Grills, French ZKW Fogs, Euro dash bins, Power Lumbar Support is next, Coming e39 M5 interior light, Bimmer Magazine 8/2007 | | | 12-18-2006, 03:38 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | The 0W-40 is what the Mobil 1 website recommends for a 1998 318ti. I've used it once, but they don't have it in the 5 quart jugs like the 5W-30. So I've stuck with that for cost and convenience. | | | 12-18-2006, 03:45 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | I use 0w-40 as well as the previous owner of my TI. If you go to bavauto, and use the keywords "Lubro Moly", it'll be 4 listing down the page along with other oils and additives. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 12-18-2006, 05:08 AM | #11 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | See when it coems down to oil i go by the time of the year. For winter i use 5w-30 and the rest of the year i use 10w-40 or 30,can't remember off the top of my head but it's in my shed. When it's cold i use thinner oil and when it's hot i use the thicker stuff. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 12-18-2006, 05:51 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | I use 15w40 Mobile 1 year round works fine at starting in sub zero and stays together at the higher temps.
