Dave
I have 20% tint on the windows, black interior, and the unit would be black as well. The rockford fostgate is going to be leaving soon anyways and all the speakers will be upgraded/replaced...other than that, the car doesnt have a whole lot of gadgetry in it. Besides, without the faceplate, the unit is pretty much useless. Unless they know exactly what i have in the car, itll look just like any other cd player without the faceplate.

Go to Costco and buy a Magellan Rodamate! They're 500$ and they're awesome if you can do a little "fitting"

I got a Hand held PDA with built in GPS & screen mounted sucker

good because it's totally transferable & hand held too (need to find a restaurant while walking in prague - sorted)

I was considering a built in one - but way too much hassle (+ what about updates - don't you need DVDs from the dealer or something)

With the PDA i just download & synch - I guess its' the same with other removable GPS too

GPS units are very nice to have. If I was going to get one I would get a CF type and run it on my Pocket PC. That way it's protable and you can use it as a PDA too. The in dash head units that support GPS are also very cool, but they are expensive, they block your center air vents, and are a bit of a distraction. Just my two cents.

I have a garmin streetpilot 560. By far one of the best GPS units I have ever had. I had the Pioneer AVIC-N2, but I sold it because it stuck out like a sore thumb in the dash. The in dash kits like from alpine, pioneer and such, work good, but are a very easy target for thieves. Only the bottom half of the face is removable in most cases and it makes it stick out even more. Thats why I opted for the streetpilot.

Nice bump, Mallard!

I have a HTC Hermes (Smartphone) with TomTom loaded on it, adn all US and Canada maps, plus a tiny BT GPS module. I only use it when I need it, but it does voice navigation prompting too, and works great. My e90 has iDrive already.

I'm thinking of getting a 135i and foregoing the iDrive in lieu of a smartphone with GPS integrated into it on that car.

+1. The only other option I would consider is an LCD in dash head unit w nav.

Nav units are way more useful for their POIs than not getting lost. They're nice if they can recalculate if you go off-route (to go around traffic, etc). I can imagine those flip-out screens would block the HVAC?

I'm contemplating getting a Garmin 10x (tiny BT GPS, smaller than my toll tag transponder) to match with my smartphone, but right now I can't justify the cost since the rare times I get lost I can find directions using my phone.

Depending on how and where you're traveling, I highly suggest a CB radio. Good for avoiding traffic (you'll know several miles in advance, and can ask for directions around it), not getting tagged by speed traps (you'll know what mile marker the "bear" is hiding) and just for craps and giggles.

I read that you cannot use suction cups in CA.

Not true?
