My brother drove one hour from his home non-stop on the freeway. He had to make a stop at a red light and noticed the temp gauge was rising and had gone past the middle about 3/4 of the way. He immediately drove home and stopped it before it went any further. I troubleshoot and find the problem was low coolant, after a refill/bleed I thought the problem was fixed, I even monitored it for a few days. I then decided to take it on a long trip for an interview about 3 hours away. I kept checking the temp and it was fine until the last three hours home. I was litterally a block away form my house at a gas station and the temp guage had reached 3/4 of the way to red. I decided, f*ck it I'm almost home the air would cool it before I get to my house. I drove it half way there and the temp reaches red for 1 second I immediately pull over and turn the engine off. I'm so worried I fried my engine I can't afford to fix it. I popped the hood open and heard hissing from the rear of the engine I assume it's the plastic fitting, but I'm not sure I haven't had anytime to inspect further. The coolant level is zero. What are my odds of the engine surviving? | | | 09-09-2015, 11:27 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | If it went to the red on the temp gauge, it's toast. You should have stopped at 3/4 and let it cool down or had it towed home. Good luck! __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 09-09-2015, 08:22 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Globally Posts: 1,162 | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 If it went to the red on the temp gauge, it's toast. Good luck! | Truth expect a headgasket at minimum. | | | 09-11-2015, 05:39 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Jun 2012 Location: Central Valley Posts: 65 | I didn't want to jinx myself, but she lives! I thought it was the rear plastic connector, which I changed only 30,000 miles ago, but it was actually the hose attached to the connector. All my hoses are old and never been changed I will do that shortly. I'll definitely monitor my car, but it does feel slower on acceleration, might just be my mind though. At this point I'm hoping its all ok. | | | 09-12-2015, 09:27 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2012 Location: Tamarac, FL Posts: 17 | Hopefully you didn't crack a head or block. I used to have a 318ti that the previous owner overheated and the head cracked. | | | 09-12-2015, 03:15 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: Jun 2012 Location: Central Valley Posts: 65 | Yea, that's what I'm hoping. I found out why it felt funny I think it was a loose gas cap.
