What octane fuel are you using?
Are there any additives in the gas you are using?

Spent the last 3 hours replacing the compartment air filters, windshield cowl covers and cleaning all the nasty gunk that was underneath. I must say I never thought that this would be such a hidious task.

Had to remove battery, battery tray, ecm cover and lots of other crap just to get to them.

PS. I bought generic air filters for the compartment and they did not clip on as the oem did so I had to use some ingenuity and added a smear of shoe goo to the edges and it lined up like a glove.

Thanks for the reply. I like the look of twin pipes, and I will probably to with a twin pipe muffler when my oem one wears out.

91 octane. In the last 6 months, I changed the 02 sensor and used the CRC "Guaranteed to Pass" stuff, and put in new NGK 4 prong spark plugs.

On an all highway trip (Tucson, AZ to LA) it got between 28-30 mpg. I'm thinking clean the ICV next?

Honestly, I'd go with 89 octane and see what happens.

When I had a 4-banger my mileage went down when I used higher octane fuel.
Although, 19 is low.

I used mid grade on my 96 back when I had the M44.

However, I've known some folks to put 91+ octane in a 1993 Geo Prism, that was news to me

And Raceland coilovers? They roll with a two year warranty. Or do I try and pop out my bilstine front shock and strut? and buy some new ones for the rear.

When I bought the car I was using 89 for a while (it says to on the cap). It also only got about 19 mpg city then so that's why I moved to 91. Since I moved to 91 it usually gets about 20 or 21 in the city, but this tank recently got 19 for some reason. I guess maybe I'll try going back down.

Not sure if it means anything but I've also changed the thermostat in the last 6 months.

first, 89~91 all have the same amount of "bang" in them.

What the octain rating simply states is its resistance to spontaneously self igniting.



Your dumbping a TON of fuel, are you sure your car is burning all of it?

Today I spent the day taking out the transmission by following these awesome instructions: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...ch_Replace.htm

The problem I just ran into is the very last, top bolt that attaches to the starter. The starter housing are not threaded, they are bolted. The lower bolt was easy to remove. The top bolt has been the bane of my existence. 1. I can NOT reach/fit/slide/jam/hammer my way to the nut behind the bolt. 2. I have unfortunately stripped the torx head of the bolt.

I don't see another option other than pulling the engine, unless anyone has any ideas.

If not, does anyone know of any good engine/transmission-pulling article? I googled it, but haven't found anything too comprehensive.

[Strawman]

Just drove from San Luis Obispo to Ventura and back, with a detour to Ojai to get a snack with my lovely wife. Yeah, the check engine light is on again... but it usually happens after my wife stalls it and I have to reset it.

This upcoming Friday I begin (finally!) the M52 & ZF trans swap using J!m's bible as a guide. I'll take pics and do a write-up.

God that bolt is a bitch. Me and a buddy pulled the trans off his e46 323 a few times and he got pretty proficient. I've messaged him but he's in Afghanistan and it may be a bit for a response...

I remember using a really long extension and a impact gun...

Regardless, the motor doesn't have to be pulled.

Cleaned the ICV today. Took about an hour. Carb cleaner everywhere. Hopefully this fixes my mileage issue. Going to take it on a test ride to the junkyard.
