Default Trunk won't open

I've only had my '96 ti for a grand total of 3 days from an auction, having some small problems, if someone can help with those issues it's about
engine overheating-fan not working. But back to my problem, my trunk won't open. I tried the keys and it locks and unlocks the doors when I turn the key in the trunk, but the trunk won't open. What am I not doing. Even had the guy at Pepboys try and he couldn't open it either.

I guess returning it is out the question.
Here's one thread about the hatch lock.

I don't want to return it if it's something simple to replace.

with the doors unlocked, push the button in (the keyhole on the hatch)and at the same time push down on the hatch itself. Sounds like you have a sticky latching mechanism. Once you get it open, hose it down with some good penetrating agent such as breakfree or PB blaster, wipe it clean and lube with a good grease.
