Perhaps the more important question is: How many hours and dollars can you spend on the project?

No the better question is why? They may look cool but functionally they suck..
I'd give a lot to have plain controls in my E46..

But some of us like buttons – and automatic gizmos when they do our bidding, which unfortunately, isn't always.

Isn't one system mechanical and the other electrical though? So you'd have to replace everything short of the vents in order to do this?

Both systems blow the same heat ya know.

A couple pages from Ron Stygar about the 318ti IHKS:

And a page about the digital IHKA system the OP is interested in. The E36 system is digital, and a bit simpler and more compact. Having to automatically regulate the temperature in two zones makes the IHKA considerably more complex than the IHKS.
