Default grinding / pulling car apart when reversing

hi all

i have just picked up my 1995 318ti and need some urgent help or pointers as to where to start looking

occasionally when reversing i get the feeling that the car doesnt wasnt to go backwards and feels as if the exhaust has fallen down and is digging into the road

it sounds like it is coming from the rear driver side (in UK) and i also get a weird grinding sound from there when driving in reverse

now i think it may have something to do with the hand brake as the car only really seams to have the hand brake work on the passenger side

has anyone else had this issue and is it just brakes or is it something else or more sinister?

regards

ben

the ti uses a drum brake inside the drum for the e-brake, I've seen the springs in them rust to the point of breaking which can make the shoes and other parts just roll around loose inside the drum. it's possible you have a part that's wedged itself in a way that it binds when the car is reversing. I'd pull the drivers rear brake apart and see if there's anything rolling around in there.

you're probably going to need an impact driver with an allen head or something similar to loosen the rotor set screw, if you don't have one I'd recommend taking it to a shop

or if u cant get the set screw out and end up stripping it you can allways just drill the screw out with a metal drill bit

Cheers I will try and get the wheel off tonight and check it out. Is it just 1 torn screw holding the disc in place?

Well had a look and the whole lot covered in rust.

Took caliper off then tried to undos the 2 15mm bolts holding carrier and no joy

On a positive the disc screw was piece of cake.

Decided I'm gonna get new discs pads shoes and handbrake spring kit and do the lot in 1 go

Front has new discs just needs new pads and brakes will be fully refreshed

Might I suggest performing the change to both sides instead of just the defective side.

Hi

That is what I meant along with changing front pads both sides to make the whole braking system refreshed

right then finally got round to have a spare bit of time to work on the car and got to the bottom of the brake issue.

the pins that hold the handbrake shoes to the back plate had pulled through the rotten back plates causing the shoes to move around inside the drum and get the springs and pins jamming.

got new pins, springs and hand brake shoes and refitted but due to the rotten back plates i had to push the pins through then then through a washer so they cant pull back through

all done up brakes set and then given a test drive with a few hand brake turns to check it all worked (on private land)

job done
