Hey all, I posted a wtb thread this past weekend, and this morning on Craigslist, I saw a ti that was put up an hour before I saw it. I was the first one to see it, and I bought it. I'll get some pics up tomorrow when it's daytime. The exterior isn't in greatest shape, it's got some dings and chips about everywhere, I'll have to give it a going through. Anyone in SoCal want to show me how to claybar? The interior isn't bad. This looks to be a "base" ti, as it has no extra doo-dads. No OBC computer. Just a clock. Nice working A/C, which is what I needed. 120k miles, carfax verified. The seller said he did most of the maintenance himself, as he is a mechanical engineering professor. It has steel wheels with no hubcaps and bald tires so I'm gonna look at getting some nice alloys soon. Here are my initial questions of things that I'm not familiar with: -I noticed that the two serpentine belts have cracks in them. Like, all over them. They were changed 40k ago. Do they need to be done again? -The reverse light switch gets stuck, so the reverse lights are on when the headlights are on. If you go in and out of reverse a bunch, they eventually turn off. But they'll turn back on. -The driver door doesn't lock with the key, but the key definitely fits in it. The door locks from the trunk though. This is all I can think of now. I'll probably have more tomorrow. I'm 21 years old and this is my 2nd car, I feel very fortunate to be in this position, and I'm happy I have a ti to be friends with my 1600-2!! -Matt | | | 07-17-2012, 06:07 AM | #2 | Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Irvine, California Posts: 73 | Congrats! Glad you found one! I have a guy that can find some sweet e36 rims and tires hmu, also whats claybar? | | | 07-17-2012, 08:04 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | Claybar is a way to get the swirls out of paint. ***NEW ISSUE*** Tonight I was showing the car to some friends, and when I went to leave, the ignition was spinning 360 degrees. I was able to get it to start but when I went to shut it off, I couldn't find the point at which the key would stop spinning. So we stalled the car to shut it off and disconnected the battery. Is anyone well versed in the ignition system in e36s? I have no idea what I'm looking at! And I can't drive the car currently. I'll buy someone beer if they help me out asap! Congratulations on the purchase, in regards to the serpentine belts you need to change them. Anytime you are able to identify cracking, they need to be changed. The key issue is common and there are many threads avaialable to help you. Do some searching and post questions if you cannot find the information that you are looking for. | | | 07-17-2012, 04:51 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | I will get pics today! Needs a good wash, perhaps some buffing. It looks very plain! I have a lead on some authentic AC Schnitzer wheels and tires btw, 16x8. Will these fit without any problems? | | | 07-17-2012, 07:53 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | The dash is apart because I'm trying to fix this key spinning situation. I'm thinking that the plastic in the ignition switch is just worn down. Would that be correct diagnosis or is there something else wrong with the tumbler? | | | 07-17-2012, 09:02 PM | #10 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Hey Matt, congrats on the purchace and welcome to the forum!
