Default The M44 Engine Picture Thread!

56k, turn around and run.

I think it would be helpful if we started a thread that contains pictures of M44 engine parts. It's nice to know what you're gonna be dealing with, before you do work on your engine. These first six pictures are not mine, so I apologize for the pilfering. It's just great to have shots of the engine when it's out of the car. Feel free to add any pictures you have. (Maybe we can start an M42 one too?)

Wow... is it hard to remove the camshafts, and are any better ones even available?

M44 Engine from 98 Z3 Autmatic

I bought the z3 m44 engine to replace my dead 318ti m44 engine and a difference i noticed was the crank at the front. All the sensors match up and PnP with each other, but the gear deal behind the pulleys are different. The 97 M44 has one, but the 98 M44 does not?!?!? Tomorrow i will confirm where the Crank Position Sensor (CPS) is on the 97 M44, but the CPS for the 98 M44 is at the rear of the block next to the flywheel.

Edit: They both have the same part #'s on realoem and look the same. Maybe an aftermarket pully was put on?

Update: The crank position sensors are located in the same location on both engines, but the front of the crank is different and i still have no info on why.

Back of the motor sort of tucked under the starter, IIRC. It was not bad to get at with the lower intake manifold out to do the cooling pipes. I am sure it would be accessable from below if you had a lift? I replaced mine, just because I was there and there were almost 200K on the motor.

Thanks for the pictures guys. I'm planning on pulling my M44 out and putting a new one in it's place. First big automotive job so every bit of information helps!
