Default EWS

So I'm reading a lot about the whole EWS alignment thing and would like some clarification:

If you have the DME, EWS (some box on the passenger side of the car), the ignition module (where the key goes), and the key from a donor car, and swap these items into your car then no "alignment" is needed and your ti should start fine(?).

However, if you have a DME, but no EWS/key, then you need this EWS alignment to synch the swapped DME with the stock EWS/key. In order words, the stock ti key is retained after undertaking EWS alignment at the dealer(?).

Thanks.
