need some polishing tips

I bought some wheels 1 piece style 5s and I want to polish the lips on them and do color centers..now I kno sanding is reguiered and buffing...what's the best and eaziest way to polis the lips...thanks

Any 2? - jk...

No easy way to do it right, only the best way... and it's a multi step process...

Depending on existing scratchs/curb rash, you will need a selection of sand paper from coarse to ultra-fine. Think 120 grit for very rough areas all the way down to 2000 grit for final polish sanding.

Also, polishing compound for after sandpaper, usually 2 varieties - medium and high gloss polish; A Mothers polishing ball (attaches to a drill) is a great tool for the finish work.

You will also want to strip the clear-coat off the rims down to the bare metal (Jasco Paint and Epoxy remover is my favorite) prior to any primering, painting or polishing...

So the steps are;

Strip the entire wheel, lip and center. Leave no clear coat behind!
Sand the lip to remove any scratches or rash.
Primer the center section (2 to 3 light coats of primer)
Paint the center section (3 good, light coats of your preferred color)
Clearcoat the center section (3 or more light coats)
Polish the lips...

Lol..yea I've seen a couple vids now and got a an idea..its not gna be a 1 day thing. Good thing is that the rims don't have any kind of crubage or scratches...since I also wrk in a bodyshop. Sanding won't be a problem jst da the hole wheel and hand sand unreachable areas..as for paint I was thinkin something like gold or bronze/ still thinking about it....since I coudlnt get my hands on some 2pc style 5s. The deal on these was just unbeatable ($100).. Btw ur car looks fkrn sweet w those rims keep up the good wrkn

Thanks for the props!

There is no need to sand the center section and around the spokes, just use stripper to get the finish off... It should be smooth enough and you aren't polishing that part. I did need to use a long, round nylon bottle cleaning brush to help clean up that area before painting.

Sounds like a lot of work. It seems to me that it would be easier to just have them chromed. Or, better yet... just buy some wheels that are already chromed. I happen to know someone... LOL

Yea 1000 wetsand for the center face should be fine and some heave sandind on the lip
Althouh it wouldn't look bad w a black gloss lip...I jst think it stands out more w the polish

All i am going to tell you is that it will be a hard an long process..

you mean style 5's like this

its a real Pain in the butt to do this but in the end the outcome is perfect!
here is the items u need

1. Aircraft Paint Remove (works the best in my opinion
2. Sand paper 80 - 2000grit
3. Blue magic polish (sold at kragen or autozone)
4. Time

start by stripping the wheels with the stripper, after that sand away. Take your time and it will come out nice! i will post pics of my wheels tomorrow when they have some light

Started today w the striper and holy crap its a process..got most of all the paint of the lips jst seems like its not penetrating the las coat primer..but will start sanding down tomorow to clean up the lips..any sugestion on sandig by hand or machine?? Da sander and finish by hand wet sand

the more stripper the better trust me its a pain in the ass!




for polishing i would recommend a power ball for that mirror finish

I did this too.. and yeah.. it takes forever!! the paint is so hard and thick. What I did, very dangerous i know. Is jack up the whole rear end of your car from the diff block the front wheels and turn it on! cheap lathe. However doesn't work so good if u don't have lsd =P but cut down the time by half.. If only you could do this with 17" style 5's

Yea it is a (PITA) I'm going to do the same thing you did lol I saw a vid online some dude did it and much faster than doing it w the rim on the floor..how did yours turn out have any piks? Thanks

Nice yeah this was one of the better ones I did took way to long.. but they did get a lot of comments. Hard to see the mirror from the light and angle but give you an idea. Now just to finish by 17" 5's =D
