Default Rear Brake Shield / Parking Brake

When I bought my ti, one of the non-functional items was the parking brake. My driveway is just sloped enough that the car will creep down it when parked in reverse with me in it, but won't once I get out. I kinda want to get it fixed.

Since I worked with PO I asked him about it. He handed me some of the parking brake parts when I bought it, so I knew that he had disabled it but didn't know why.

Turns out the brake shield on the driver's side had rusted and the pivot pins for the shoes had bent or come loose causing the brake to drag constantly. He didn't want to go into replacing the brake shield, so he kludged together some way of disabling the brake by removing some parts and messing with the cable at the center console.

What kind of job am I in for to change that brake shield? I tried to look it up at RealOEM and couldn't even find it on the diagrams. He said that the half shaft has to come out. I'm thinking it might have to stay broken.

Ok, I updated the thread to refer to the "brake shield" instead of the backing plate, since that seems to be the right term. And I've learned that the hub needs to come off to get to it and that means the half shaft comes out and that also likely means a new bearing as it'll likely separate when you pull the hub.

But, the guy in the video below has done the repair by cutting the shield in half, eliminating the need to remove the hub. Each half is held on by two bolts so it should be OK, or so it seems.

Video link at the bottom, noteworthy bits start at the 3 minute mark.

Thoughts?

Since each half is held on by two bolts AND the spring clips/pins don't use a huge amount of pressure, this looks like it could work without issue.

I've done plenty of cars like this never had a problem. But if you do worry about it you could tack them back together. It beats stripping the whole assembly down and it's a lot quicker
