ok. I've found the solution and BTW, I'm very pissed off at the moment. Here is why:

THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG!!!!

Seeing that I'd assembled the transmission correctly, I called a buddy of mine who has a lot of mechanical experience to talk me through this. Finally, he goes out to his VW GTI, gets in, and shifts through all the gears WITHOUT HAVING TO DEPRESS the clutch!!!!

So. That means the behavior I observed was normal. Which means I just wasted a couple hours and energy taking out the engine + tranny and will have to spend some more putting it back!

ARRRRG!!! Were you talking about shifting with the engine off? Lol, bummer dude, but look at the bright side, you're learning your car little by little. Next time you have to take things apart, you'll be a pro

lol - if the engine was running, I'd have been cheering and posting that my swap was 95% complete. Well, I've got the tranny reassembled and the stuff back into the car. I'm going to take a small break, then loosely bolt the tranny to its mount, reattach the driveshaft, fuel lines, and heater hose. Probably attach the condenser as well.

In the morning, I'll pick up the engine mounts and put those in, then I can tighten down the tranny, connect up the coolant lines and radiator and as much of the critical electrical stuff as I can.

buy tires for me new wheels, return the rental in pittsburgh, take the greyhound back to erie, and finish up. with any luck, this will be running saturday night.

Dang I wish I had your motivation. I've been doing a bunch of projects, finally got rid of the big ass dumpster in front of my house. Everyday I go out and look at my M3 and Ti in the garage, shake my head and go back inside. Sunday I'm definitely pulling the motor outta the M3, then all next week will be spent swapping the dash, wiring etc. Still want to take the motor apart to replace all of the seals and gaskets. Gotta make a list of parts I need to order. Then before I drop the motor, I have to replace a bunch of suspension bushings and whatnot. Then I need to fab up the exhaust, buy a LSD and new tires, tint the windows and off to the bodyshop for paint. I feel your pain man. Especially because you have to travel to work on your car, mines in my garage and I just can't get motivated.

I'm about to feel more pain. looks like the post office where my motor mounts are being held isn't open on saturdays. i may need to delay until tuesday to finish up. I'll call a couple dealerships in the morning and even the post office in case the usps website is wrong.

Grr. . . in the past couple weeks it's been one thing after another slowing me down.
