I have a threaded now. There are some pics of the gears in one of the threads here. (can't search too effectively on my phone). I have read that swapping the position of the two drive gears have helped some folks. It looked like a plastic/nylon composite gear from what I recall. 1998 & 1997 318ti Sport Schwartz II 1995 318ti Active Alpineweib III __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! It looks to be an allen type motor. I'll pull mine, disassemble it and compare. It doesn't describe the type of plastic, but I bet it the same type of plastic that is used in the E28/E30 electric antenna gearing. I may have a spare gear in the garage for repairing those. __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! In the frame there are wires with attached wheels that drives the roof back. These "wheels" has grooves on them one upper and one lower. Which groove should the roof be mounted in? | | | 06-23-2014, 04:32 PM | #41 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Quote: Originally Posted by mr-bear I must ask; have you ever had the roof of the frame? Which groove should the roof be mounted in? | I have a spare 98 roof I just acquired, still in the box and can pull it out to see what I can see at this point. I''ve only had the car for a month and am awaiting delivery of a new motor to enable the in-car roof to properly operate. I've not had much time to investigate the roof mechanics yet. Perhaps others who have actually serviced or repaired their roof can comment. I've been wondering who the actual original manufacturer of the motors is to see if we can source the gears from them. I just need a little time to research them in parallel to the action you are suggesting. I think that is a long shot at this point tho... I look forward to helping a longer term fix for our motor issues. Which groove should the roof be mounted in? | Sorry, just seeing this now. I have the roof off of the car, but not off the frame. I do have both type of motors now. A threaded and a Hex Key motor. They look identical inside and outside on one of my threaded motors as far as I can see. A second threaded motor has a different wiring pigtail that looks to have a switch connector in the harness. The original for my car had the power only leads. Both of my threaded motors work with intact gears. The allen motor has teeth missing causing a jerky opening and closing motion. (James and Michael, you were spot on...) So, I believe I have a broken top on the car now with an intact, working motor and a 98 top off the car that is fully functional. Easy fix for now, I'll figure out how the switches differ and which one I'd prefer to use. There are two grooves (the red and the green on the picture). Should the roof be mounted in the upper or lower groove? | | | 06-30-2014, 08:29 AM | #44 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Quote: Originally Posted by mr-bear Is it possible for you to check the mounting on the top (without breaking it apart)? Maybe you can see it if the roof is open and you look from inside the roof...Mine was already taken apart so for this picture you can see the wheel if you remove the plastic on the left or the right front corner.
