It also says it has no ring gear so i think he just has the core.

Yes, from the original post it's just the differential. No gears or housing.

What you do is take out the axle input shafts and unbolt the sides of the diff. There are like 6 or 8, 13 mm bolts and once those are out. The core will just fall out. Easy job.

To do it properly you would need to check the backlash on the gears with the new LS unit and shim the side flanges correctly. Just because the gears stay the same doesn't mean the new unit is the same dimensions as the open it is replacing.

You need to measure the backlash of the gears before the swap, then try to achieve the same amount after swapping the ring gear onto the LSD. You should also check the wear pattern on the teeth. In order to do this correctly, you will need some extra shims which go between the bearing housings and the cast housing. Even BMW needs to shim these to get them right, so no 2 are exactly the same.
Don't touch the pinion gear. If you do you will be in for a rude awakening when you try to get the gears set up.

this is true, reason the gear is no longer on this lsd, i got this lsd with the new gear set after i put the first lsd in.. i just kinda threw it in and eyeballed the backlash haha it went good for quite a while.. but yeah if u look online u can find how to's on how to set n shim the gears proper.. its really not a hard job, i can have the whole rear out in half an hour n back in within one...
