Default Play in steering wheel

Have just noticed today that there is a fair amount of play in my steering wheel ( about an inch each way ) ... not too much of a problem just now but dont know how safe it is? Any feedback?

My car had a very good play in the steering wheel, I could feel it when the wheel was centered, but once I turned it about half a turn either way it would go away. I replaced the steering rack and it solved the issue, seems like the racks wears in the center position over time. Don't think it's a safety issue, but I really hated the play.

If the play is present with the wheel not centered, check your steering column components for wear and condition.
