Default gremlins in mass air?????

Hey guys and gals,

Just wanted to say thanks for having such a wunderbar forums. I have a 97 318ti, m44 and the likes. The car has been sitting for a while i got it for free, i did one heck of a tune up on her including: plugs, air filter, fuel injectors, fpr, mass air sensor, cam and crank sensors, spark wires, oil and stuff, new intake gaskets and o2 sensors, new tranny cooler and prob a few more things that i have forgotten. I the runs like crap at low rpms and misses and fouls plugs quick. the prevous owner ran it like this for awhile so there is no telling on how much carbon is built up on the cylinders catalytic converter. It ran ok when its in limp mode but crappy when it warms up. i have a peake reader and it gives me a few codes that always come up such as 73: air mass meter , 79:load calculation crosscheck and a code 5f ....what the heck is 5f???? i talked to dan @ peake research and he has no idea... on obd2 codes it reads p0100 and p0446. what am i doing wrong or over looking? could the cat be clogged to hell and messing with the readings???? please help because otherwise i am going to use this bmw as target practice for my barrett.......thanks in advance guys!!!!!

The Peake readers are notorious for not playing well with BMWs. You might want to take it to Advance Auto Parts and have them run a scan on it to verify what you're getting from the Peake. They'll do it for free as long as it's daylight and not raining. I'm assuming that since you were in there under the intake manifold that all your injector vacuum hoses are OK?

And you made sure there were no cracks in the rubber tube from the meter to the throttle body? Those symptoms are all too familiar.....

446 is evap stuff, that could be causing a vac leak.
the 100 is a MAF circuit problem- check the connectors and wiring for the maf.

Is the MAF hooked up? Are there any frayed wires? If not you most likely have a bad MAF and it is indicating bad MAF wiring simce the sensor has a completely broken circuit in it. Most likely the heater circuit for the MAF element.

yes, the maf is hooked up and no the wires are not frayed. i have tried both the old and a brand new maf and of course the same thing.

I'll try and get you the actual readings from my car tomorrow. If you dig up a schematic you can find the pins and test for continuity from the MAF connector.

you might want to go through all the engine related connectors under the hood and reseat (round ones by the fusebox) them, including the DME. My car had a bunch of leaves in the one connector.

if anyone cares to know, i broke down and got this pig towed to a shop and its been there fro a few days, i called them and they said it could be one of two things either the maf or the dme. the maf is new. so i opted to buy a dme and it's on its way. so hopefully this will cure the problem has anyone ever seen a dme with this kind of problem?

How much did you get charged? You could have swapped a DME EWS and key for $100. Yes a DME will do this if it is water damaged. Your new DME will get damaged if the weep holes are not cleared

i payed 150 for thew dme. i have no idea on how much the total bill from the shop is, i dont think i wanna know. the car sat for a few years. the wierd thind is that the shop kept saying that the code is for the maf going bad but they have replaced it several times and finally just told me that its the dme .... so i really have no idea im just going off of what they said.
