hold it with both hands as hard as you can and pull up.

be sure not to knock yourself in the face/forehead with it.

yanking hard (with just a bit of twisting/wiggling) is the only way and no you won't hurt the shifter, and i second the don't hit yourself in the face comment...

i can't get it to budge. my whole body is sore from trying. does anyone have any other ideas? it's just the stock leather knob. i don't know why it won't come out.

there's a screw under the plastic emblem. do i need to take that out or does it matter? i took it out and still couldn't get it off.

fourth that.... i've changed one a couple of times, so far each time managed to whack myself in the head each time. O well....

Just pull,

you could try spaying a little silicon spray around the base; not sure it will help but could be worth a try.

Don't twist it at all. Pull up with a jerk. PULL HARD. From the back seat in fourth gear might even help. Put your back into it.

maybe if you try vice grips around the top?

I replaced my old one when it got so tired i jerked it off shifting into second gear...you don't want to wait that long...it's awkward

...you can do it baby put your back into it

or you could take a utility knife and just slice it from the bottom up(so you don't accidently cut the boot). Theres a plastic sleeve built into the knob, may take some elbow grease to cut through, but it will work. Even a small cut will atleast loosen it, just careful not to cut yourself. Pulling up too hard on the shifter may damage the forks on the other end of it, the arm itself is made out of aluminum.

i still can't get it off, but thanks a ton for all the input. i'm gonna try the "from the back seat in fourth" idea next. should i have someone hold in the clutch or does that matter?

what would mcgyver do?

mcgyver would quit being afraid of damaging his clutch/shifter/mechanism and just pull

*has bent tire iron removing lug before*
