Default Intake

Hey guys, im not really looking for an intake, but i was throwing around the idea for one. i would like some sound, but not risk losing any power. I have read about the Cosmo CAI, and i dont wanna spend that because im gonna eventually putting a S52 in. I found this intake on ebay and it looks like it properly positioned to not suck in hot air. I was also thinking i could put some heat wrap on it to keep the heat off the metal tube. What are your thoughts? Just keep the stock system? thanks guys!

Fogg the air box... I believe its been the hands down performance winner, unless you have a 95 which already has a CAI.... Stock...

CAI= COLD AIR INTAKE.. a Fogged air box is just running a 3-4" inch diameter tube from behind the fog light into your stock air filter box..need to cut a hole the size of the tube you use and covering the already existing one.. i did this to my air box and well felt slight improvemt took me around 15-25mins to make and install and around 25-30$ worth of materials

Ahh right so as mines a 95 no gains to be made? Looking at the air box mine looks very restrictive. I might knock up a remote cone filter lower down and more forward. Mine has no fog lights so the blanking plate could be removed to make a good front mounted air duct.

my car has no fogs either so i took the fog cover off.. ran the air duct from there to the front of the air box... inside the engine bay it looks pretty clean.. it just looks kinda sloppy at the fog light... i need to do something about that.. but besides that well is pretty much the same thing as a CAI and well is like 80 bucks cheaper than the cosmo racing one

The 95 already gets its air off the grill, ahead of the radiator. The opening is plenty large and the 95 does not have the foam in the air box or the long intake like the M44.

I have a hard time believing any CAI without a AFM replacement is going to do anything.

I worked on a project one time where we used a flow bench to test the door style AFM units. The Bosch ones like the BMW were almost invisible from a restriction point of view until you got to some ridiculous flow rates. Way more than the M42 would get to without hitting about 8000 rpm.

Basically it provides noise...

Cheers Dave for clearing that up for me .. so a new air filter panel is all I need. I'm not into noise I'm 43 Ffs :0)

I'll probably get one of those midnight racing chips (110 quid delivered) and call that a do for engine mods..

Thanks again.

Simon.

Yea, the restriction points are fairly obvious as you look at each part of the system. I have thought for quite a while that the boot from the air flow meter to the throttle body looked like the best potential improvement but have not found a replacement that I like. The stock rubber one has the accordion looking bellows in it and that's gotta be causing some weird turbulence....

Yea,,, I can't convince myself to spend the $$ yet, bit when you really look at the whole intake path that bellows is definitely suspect...

While we're on the subject, I'd strongly suggest that everyone with a m44 open up their intake box and look at that foam. If it has started crumbling, go ahead and dump it all out, you're just sucking pieces of it into your engine (from the lid) and making your filter dirty with the stuff in the lower part of the box.

This guy posts on M42club.com

I could see it working pretty slick in my 95, if I needed space like for a DASC...

This one looks nice. Do you think it has a chance to suck water if it rains really bad?
