Default Car Wouldn't Turn Off

Has this happened to anyone? This morning when I got to school my car would not turn off. I tried turning the key hard but it wouldn't budge, then I pulled the key out and the car kept on going. I took the car to bmw and they told me that I need a new ignition lock and the car will be ready by Friday. The bad part about this is the parts and labor is going to be around $750. Does this sound right or are they ripping me off? Thanks, Will.

The Parts Should Be Around $125-150 For The Lock Assembly, Same For The Lock Cylinder And Key, 4-6 Hours Labor.

A good way to think about dealer pricing is that they pretty much double the cost of going to an indepent services. So it should probably normally cost you $350 at most. I would try to fix it myself and probably wouldnt be to difficult with some mechanical know how.
good luck.

Does anyone know where I can order the parts my self even though they have already ordered them for future reference? Does it really take 4-6 hours?

Yeah! I agree because the same thing happended to me on my 96 ti so I replaced the entire ignition tumbler assembly and took it to an independent authorized repair shop and paid around $300-$350.

Got my car fixed and it took a week to get it back. The price was lower than they said it would have been. For parts and labor together the total was $600, so I guess that's better than $750. Good thing about having a 95 or older is that labor is $70 instead of $90 per hour.

$90 and hour? That's nuts. $40 is the norm for independent shops and $50-60 is normal for dealerships. Holy crap. And people wonder why I do my own maintenance.

no ford and chevy dealers both charge 70-80. indie shops is definately the way to go. I used to live in charlotte and i went to a sweet mechanic there that saved me lots of money on a heater/dryer. d/y/i saves me alot of money now though.

IT HAPPENED TO ME AS WELL, SO HERE YOU GO GUYS!!!
ONLY NEED SOME COMMUN SENCE!!!

Ignition Lock Cylinder/Assembly Replacement

BMW Dealer: $850.00 APPROX
YOU: $233.73

1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal. (Make sure you got the radio activation code before disconnecting)
2. Remove steering wheel…
3. Remove lower dash, unscrew the steering column upper and lower fastener screws and unclip the two halves so that you can get the shrouds off the column.

4. Remove the switch from the Lock Assembly &/or holder (holds the cruise control, wipers, and turning signals) losing the fastener screw/pull it out; the holder will be release by depressing a couple of retaining tangs located at top.
5. Remove the ignition switch by unscrewing a set of two screws holding it against the lock assembly.

6. This step may require some BMW tools, but you can use some pliers, a flat screw driver and an extra hand. Remove a ring retaining the Lock Assembly located in front of the steering column by forcing it with the pliers, and with the extra hand have it pull the ring with the flat screw driver. Pull a couple of spacers and washers and that’s it.

7. Lose the steering column by removing a couple of shear-bolts, the best way to do so drill the head off!!!, I tried the Dremel thing so I would be able to unscrew them off with a flat screw driver but it was just a waste of time and the same with the hammer and chisel idea (Haynes manual), they are pretty tight. USE A DRILL!

8. Rotate counterclockwise a black plastic ring located at the bottom of the steering column; so that the steering column is loosen for the next step…

9. Now is time to get the Lock Assembly off by unscrewing a couple of shear-bolts, AGAIN!, which is holding it against the steering column, to get this bolts off is easier to use the Dremel idea, but drilling the head off will be…faster I guess.
10. Order the:
-Lock Assembly (Part # 32-32-1-093-265 $147.42)
-Lock Cylinder (Have to be ordered thru a BMW dealer in person, because is a coded part that will match your current key (Part # 32-32-0-002-*** $64.00)
-If you managed to get the EWS antenna ring located on the outside of the Lock Cylinder without damaging it, you are my HERO! If not, You’ll have to order it! (Part # 61-35-8-364-709 $20.51)

11. I got the parts a week later and assembly is pretty easy if you manage to get everything off. Building it is just backwards.
12. For the ignition switch, after putting the bolts back, mark them off with some paint just like they were before.
13. oh! To replace the shear-bolts that you broke, buy hex head bolts this time, so that you don’t have to go thru the hazard ok drilling them off again if anything happens. (forgot the sizes sorry, just take the old ones to Home Depot to measure them with new ones [$1.80])
Total: $233.73
Saved: $616.27

I HAVE IT IN A WORD DOC WITH PICS IF SOMEONE NEEDS IT PLEASE PM OR EMAIL ME.
