Default WAY HIGH RPMs on acceleration

I have a 98 with a automatic transmission and I notice today that if im at a stop and i accelerate as quickly as I can (foot to the floor basically) my car wont shift untill 6500-6700 rpm's! when it finally shifts though it doesnt drop back down very far and its back up into the 6500 range again before it will shift. but by this time im up to 70 mph or so. im worried that one day if im trying to merge on the highway quickly the tranny is just gunna fly through the floor :/

so basically im wondering if this is normal and if it's not what could the problem be?

thanks in advance

how does it shift when your not driving with a lead foot? lol.

so you have not floored the gas before? hard to tell from your explanation, but the tranny is either doing its job keeping the engine in the power band as long as you keep the gas pedal floored.. orrrr.. it is slipping

like the reply above asked.. how is it shifting when you are driving normally around town?

At wide open throttle those are the shift points.

This is normal for ANY CAR.

Like everyone said that is perfect. At WOT the RPM you gave is right at your rev limiter which would be a perfect shift.

If you bracket raced your car you would win every race if you cut real good lights
