I live in the Panhandle of Florida, and the temperatures range from the 20s on a really cold winter day to 100+ on hot hot summer days. If anybody has a suggestion for anything better let me know! haha. | | | 07-29-2012, 04:41 AM | #78 | Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: usa Posts: 80 | Quote: Originally Posted by Breticus Mobil1 10w30. Unless you sit in bumper to bumper traffic in hot weather with the A/C running this is a good choice. BTW: 5W/40 is not a diesel only oil. Mobil One -OR- Castrol Syntec Shell Rotella T6 as last choice. | | | 01-22-2013, 02:16 AM | #79 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2013 Location: san diego Posts: 10 | So I live in San Diego. Back in the day when I had a 318is and M3 I used 10W30 Full Synthetic. Now I'm back in the BMW scene with a 318ti. The guy at the auto store recommend 5W30, I made a post on another BMW forum and they were telling me differently. Before I put in the 5W30 Full Synthetic, should I go with another weight instead? My car has around 204,000 miles. | | | 01-22-2013, 02:20 AM | #80 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | I live in Florida, and I use the high mileage Mobil1 10w30 full synthetic without any problems. Been thinking about switching up though. I've heard a lot of things about different weights. | | | 01-22-2013, 04:47 AM | #82 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2013 Location: san diego Posts: 10 | I used to use 0W-40 Mobile 1 Full Syn on my C55 AMG, then I switch to 5W-40 Shell Rotella T6. So if you are recommending that I could use 0W-40 in the 318ti, then it should be perfectly fine for me to use 5W-40 Rotella as well? | | | 01-22-2013, 04:28 PM | #83 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2011 Location: Michigan Posts: 183 | I would think so. When you go to the mobil 1 site and put in your car it comes back with 0W-40 so I think that would be close enough for me. | | | 04-19-2013, 10:55 PM | #84 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | Ran seafoam through my oil about 50 miles before my oil change. Used 0w40 this time around. Think the car is liking it better. | | | 08-27-2013, 03:18 AM | #85 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2013 Location: Nevada City, CA Posts: 13 | I followed others from this site and went with Mobil 1 0W40 and have been happy with it. I just found out that I'm running an M42 head on an M44 block which from what I understand, has increased its compression. Would I be better served with a heavier weight oil, thinner weight, or does it make any difference? | | | 08-27-2013, 01:57 PM | #86 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Auburn, Alabama Posts: 206 | Quote: Originally Posted by robnhod I followed others from this site and went with Mobil 1 0W40 and have been happy with it. It would if you're engine is running like a 2 stroke I guess. I have the best luck with 10w-30, only Mobil1 of course . It tends to use 5w-30, around 1/2-3/4 of a quart over the course of 5000 miles, probably because of the heat here. I would suggest 0w-40 if you live in somewhere that stays very cool/cold year round. If not, try 5w-30 or 10w-30. Personally, I think 0w is too light. The tolerances in this engine aren't as tight as newer stuff. __________________ -'98 318ti -'87 VW Scirocco, 2.0 Motronic swap -'95 VW Cabrio | | | 08-27-2013, 06:44 PM | #87 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2013 Location: Nevada City, CA Posts: 13 | Quote: Originally Posted by UberWagen Compression doesn't really have much to do with what weight oil you use. The 0w if very light and I do tend to burn/use a little more because of it. I live in the California hills so I get a wide range of temp (20-100), so maybe I'll try some 5w-30 this winter and see how it goes. | | | 12-03-2013, 10:54 PM | #88 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2013 Location: Bresse Track France Posts: 535 | hi,for me its motul 300V 15W50 for summer and 10W40 in winter Last edited by samdemange; 05-27-2014 at 11:14 AM. | | | 12-05-2013, 04:38 AM | #89 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2010 Location: Wichita Falls, Texas Posts: 1,364 | Mobil 1 10-40 year around...buy it at Walmart in 5 quart containers which is the exact amount for an oil and filter change. I don't run over 5k miles between changes. | | | 12-05-2013, 07:11 AM | #90 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2013 Location: NJ Posts: 373 | I just did a change with Mobil1 0W-40. The "European car formula" oil that most BMW guys use. I've been thinking that since this is an older car that came filled with conventional, I may just go back to a conventional oil. I do short OCI's and the temperature in NJ and St. Louis vary a lot. Plus, I'm all about saving a couple bucks anywhere. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
