Default Metric Rims and Tires??

I didn't see a thread on this and I am curious, what is the deal with metric rims and tires, I ask because there is someone down the street who has a set of bbs rz's the basketweave ones but they have a deeper lip and a black ring around the spokes, I have never seen them before, and hes selling them dirt cheap with tires, here are the dimmensions and tires

Michelin TRX 240/45 ZR 415
415mm diameter or 16.33 inches
240mm wide or about 9 1/2 inches
and i think and offset of 45

is there any difference in other than the size??, any downfalls??
thanks
-zach

Yea I looked and was like whoah those are soo pricy, but it seems odd to me that their is a specific tire for them, why couldn't you just run normal tires, people run different sized tires on different sized rims all the time, why couldn't these??

you can get away with running a different width tire on a rim, you can't do that with different rim diameters though

ohhh I didnt even think of that, huh well that all makes sense, its that extra .33 added onto the diameter that makes tires cost $400 each

Those were originally on the E24 M6. Use them as hose reels - tires are crazy expensive and outdated technology that were barely decent in their heyday.
