The good news is that about a year and a half ago BMW changed the style of the hood emblem and I don't think they will wear the same... I'm hoping they last longer but the jury will be out for a few more years. | I noticed this on a replacement emblem that I bought about a year ago- the older style is almost like a resin, which will eventually start to crack and fall off of the badge over time; the newer ones are enameled and while they should not suffer this same problem under normal circumstances, I would think that if you wash/polish your car a lot, the enamel will not wear as well over time as the resin-type badges.
