Default Bad sound from under the car

I'm getting ready to go out and jack it up and look under the car, but about a week ago, I made a sharp right turn out of a shopping center, gave it some gas, and heard a pretty bad sound from under the car. It sounded like an exhaust leak at first, but now I'm convinced its something more serious.

It is progressively getting worse, and it only happens when I turn right. It sounded like it was coming from the front left wheel, but today it sounded like it was directly underneath me. Its hard to tell exactly where it is coming from.

So, hopefully I'll see something under there. My mechanic said it could be a wheel bearing, but like I said it sounds like it is coming more from the center of the car.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your problem, because it will be expensive unless you do it your self. First of all the sound is probably your rubber flex joint, center bearing, and or your drive shaft U- joints. The bad U- joints can cause your center bearing to go bad, and your flex joint. The sound usually sounds like a thunking noise, hard to explain. It happens over time with the car as you put more miles on it. If it is the U- joints, the whole drive shaft needs to be replaced. Factory part cost's $600, it just so happens that I have a drive shaft for a manual, it only has 40,000 miles on it. So if you do need it let me know and we'll talk about price.

If it only occurs while turning, I'd be inclined to agree with your mechanic. I don't have a lot of information to work with though.

Do you get any steering wheel shake, difficulty turning or shudder when you brake? At what speeds, and does it go away after you've been driving a while?

If it's a wheel bearing, stop driving immediately. You don't want your wheel to cease and fall off, destroying your wheel, axle, and possibly other components.

Thanks guys, there was nothing jumping out at me underneath when I looked.

Sorry for the vague description, but thats how it is to me, its hard to figure out exactly where it is coming from.

I'm leaning towards the driveshaft, etc. BECAUSE: it is getting worse, and now it is not only when I turn right, but when I am going straight...but that just started and it doesnt always do it when I'm going straight.

Anyway, I appreciate the help, I'm taking to the shop tomorrow to see if they can figure it out.

Yeah thats exactly what happens starting out. The noise starts out only when you turn, then it starts happening when you accelerate. Trust me on this if you want to know if it's the drive shaft, it has to come out to check. If your mechanic does determine that it's the drive shaft, make sure you replace the flex joint (quibo) and the carrier bearing. They are both cheap parts, and the drive shafts out anyway.

OK, thats what it sounds like then, how easy is it to do it yourself?

OK, so just an FYI...all it was, was a bent cross member support, the exhaust was rattling against it! HAHA, bent it back into shape and the sound is gone!

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure...I dropped it off at the shop and thats what they told me, I dont even know what a cross member does.

But yeah, I was so happy...he called and said $57! I was thinking that if it was going to be more than $1k, I'm getting a new car (of course, keeping this, just not as my daily driver).
