Thanks,

Hmm.
German transmitions are not designed to drag race?

Get a jerico if you have to speed shift...

Sorry, I don't do EBay...too many people having too many problems. Besides, I'd rather help out a fellow club member or club vendor.

dkblu318ti, that's why I'll buy from a recycler or fellow club member.

Yep, the 6th one and NO I DON'T DRAG RACE. My research has led me to find that the Getrag 250 is the biggest POS that BMW ever put in a car (transmission wise). In fact most people won't repair them because they just don't last. Add to the fact that I track my ti (10+ weekends a year), tow a trailer and the car is supercharged. Most techs aren't surprised I go through transmissions like brake pads.

Let's see...one was 4th gear, one was 3 gear, two of them had 2nd gear issues, this one 1st gear and one had broken mounting tabs for the transmission mounts.

Cheers,
Sheridan

Thanks Dad (I mean, Father) :-)

Seriously, I installed Ireland poly engine and tranny mounts when I installed the last transmission 2 years ago. Obviously I'll be checking everything out again when I crawl under there to do the next R-n-R.

Ahhh so if your doing track days, Your working the tranny hard....
ITs funny because getrags usually arn't that bad in other cars.
Wonder if BMW is spec'ing the right lube in the tranny. MIght
be too heavy for track use....

What weight lube are you running in them?

Have you considered just switching up to a bigger transmition?

Don't buy one machined before 4/98 if possible. read below. Why buy a '96 tranny with 80k+ miles on it, when it likely will have the same problem 10K+ miles down the road. Good luck with the tranny, DrkBlue. If you haven't yet found a reputable BMW mech, I can recommend a couple independent mechanics in the area that I found recently in my search for a new car (still searching) - they are highly recommended in the bimmerforums.

This is service bulletin 23 02 99
SUBJECT:
Transmission Jumps Out of 1st or 2nd Gear Under Load
MODEL:
E36 with S5D-250G (Getrag manual transmission) and M42, M44, M50 or M52 engines.
Situation:
The transmission may jump out of 1st or 2nd gear with engine load.
Cause:
The guide sleeve for 1st and 2nd gear may have been incorrectly machined on Getrag S5D-250G transmissions installed on E36 vehicles with the above listed engines produced up to 4/98.
A new machining process for the 1st and 2nd gear guide sleeve which eliminates the above situation on all S5D-250G transmissions was introduced in production on vehicles produced from 4/98.
Correction:
If a customer complaint is received, first verify that the external gear shift linkage and clutch system are operating properly.
If the external gear shift linkage and the clutch system are functioning correctly and the problem of 1st or 2nd gear jumping out is still present, the transmission should be replaced.

Thanks Smiles,
Yep, I'm aware of the 1st and 2nd gear problem. My first 5 were post 98 but the last one was out of a earlier car. My problem now is the syncros grinding on 1st, not popping out. Besides, by now most of the cars with transmission problems have been replaced (I would think).
