This car runs very smooth. Now, I'm thinking about the Service 1 thats coming up once it actually hits 180,00k and starting to think about replacing the cooling system. Seems a bit over the top to handle myself with my current mechanical skills but would like opinions on how I should go about it. I'm 24 and this is the first car i've spent my own money on and actually care about (rest were hand-me-downs). I plan on learning as much as possible about this car and working on it. What are some words of wisdom from 318ti vets? Regarding the cooling system overhaul, it seems like its best to buy the parts and pay a pro to do it as I'm not sure how fast I can get hip to doing it myself. However, I have tons of time on my hands and love saving $$$$$! Thanks all for helping me make this decision. I feel I got a lot of car for a meager 4k (not to say thats not a lot of money but relatively speaking it doesn't seem too bad) Rob | | | 06-19-2011, 08:06 PM | #17 | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2010 Location: Bradenton, FL Posts: 10 | The car really looks like it is in great shape. The most important part, the motor, has been cared for. I bought my 318ti with 63,800 miles on it. It now has over 325,000. I recently replaced the water pump for no reason at all(worked fine/perfect shape). Obviously the coolant pipes are the most critical. With a new thermostat and housing you may blow the coolant pipes out when the water pressure increases. Just keep that in mind. Plugs, wires, control arms, ball joints and stuts/shocks, fluids are good to change now that your close to 200,000. | | | 06-20-2011, 04:04 AM | #18 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2011 Location: CA,USA Posts: 27 | Hmmm. Ok. I am still digesting a lot of information including learning how to drive stick (I pretty much have it down after about 4 days). I am willing to do all of the above but I am a bit apprehensive to tackle it on my own (unless its easy) as I have never really done a lot of mechanical work. How would you recommend approaching this task? Take it in to a private BMW specialist and have him figure it out? My pockets aren't too deep right now but I am willing to invest in the longevity if this vehicle cause it is SWEET! It covers the basics as well as the major things. Having that on hand will provide you with knowledge, you can then decide what you are comfortable with doing yourself, and what you feel should be left to a specialist...
