I tried to install mine today but it seems that I didn't do something right. there didn't appear to be anything other than the side mounts to hold it on. It all lined up well enough but was I supposed to remove the metal "bumper bar" from the OE bumper? If so, how the heck do you remove it? Can someone who has performed this mod help me out? Thanks, Paul Last edited by Quickcars; 06-07-2013 at 04:07 AM. | | | 06-07-2013, 05:14 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | I'm about to do this in a couple days so when I look at it I can post better info. But yes the metal "bumper bar" is one of the agents aiding you in a crash, so you need to swap it over. __________________ '96 318ti California Edition- Montreal blue '68 1600-2-Caribe blue | | | 06-07-2013, 05:26 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Mar 2013 Location: richmond tx ( MARS) Posts: 94 | First remove bumper trim. There will be clips all along bump under trim. You will have to push the center of the clips in to remove the clips. Once you have done that take the metel bumper off the old bumper and put it back on the car it actually never need to come off. Then install new bumper and clips. Good luck | | | 06-07-2013, 04:16 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2013 Location: New York Posts: 133 | Quote: Originally Posted by SpeedDemon First remove bumper trim. Good luck | I'm not sure I understand. What exactly do you mean "it actually never need to come off"? Are you saying that you can remove the old bumper cover but the metal bar never comes off the car? I did remove the old bumper and removing that metal bar from it looks like a real PIA!!! | | | 06-07-2013, 04:24 PM | #6 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Quote: Originally Posted by Quickcars I'm not sure I understand. It's okay to replace these when you put on a new cover | | | 06-07-2013, 09:25 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2013 Location: New York Posts: 133 | DDM Okay, so the piece I've been referring to as the "metal bar" is correctly referred to as the "carrier". Is that correct? As for the black plastic inserts, they don't look like they'll survive removal but I'm going to give it another try over the weekend (if it ever stops raining here in N.Y.). | | | 06-07-2013, 09:28 PM | #8 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Yes, the bar is the carrier. And the black plastic rivets are easy to remove. Pull out the middle piece (shaped like a flat nail, but plastic) then remove the piece it came out of. Get some small-ish cutting pliers like these, but don't cut them | | | 06-07-2013, 09:37 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2013 Location: New York Posts: 133 | DDM Alrighty then.... I'm certainly going to give it another go. I really need to find a reputable paint shop. My car is Moreau green and I'm almost certain that it's going to look aweful if I trust the wrong people to match the color. I like the way it looks with the aftermarket chin spoiler on it now even without it being painted. I do want a more OEM look so I ordered the DDM spoiler and M3 mirrors too. Unfortunately, the knuckleheads sent me mirrors for a coupe instead. Oh well.... The seller was good and accepted the return and the correct mirrors are on the way! | | | 06-08-2013, 02:13 AM | #12 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Makes sense. I would've purchased the mirrors from DDM though! | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
