Question m44 head removal

hey guys i just got hold of a 97 318ti with a blown headgasket well i was wondering if i could remove the intake manifold by just taking it off from here directly to free the head

so i don't have to mess with any of this i hope

this is my first time working on the m44 so i don't really know much about where the things go as to skip things around. any help. by the way great site and alot of help you guys give.

by the way isn't a fan and clutch supossed to be here is does this electric fan take care of that?

Electric fan only, dont worry. You need to remove the intake bolts as well as the two bolts that hold the intake to the drivers side engine mount arm as shown in the pic (the Y part).

here ya go... this should help you with intake manifold removal.

just remember, when you get the manifold off - you do not have to take out the cams to get to the head bolts (just make sure the timing chain & the fuel rail are off) - also, make sure you get NEW head bolts for re-installation.

Speaking of Head Removal... 318 motor is SNUG in engine compartment and bolts seem impossible to get to, some are so bad that you cant even get a wrench on it... we grinded down a wrench so thin that it would fit, and it snapped in half... any help?

buy the service manual... the cowl cover at the rear of the engine compartment comes off... one thing is certain... if you don't follow 'procedure' from a manual - it may not work/or last long - these are complicated machines... not Toyotas or Chevys.
