Default Keyless entry/lock button triggers alarm

Hello everyone
I have a 1996 ti and am new to this forum. Also own a '02 R1150R motorcycle and frequent the R1150R motorcycle forum, I really like bmw's! Anyway, this question is about the car.
Recently I go to lock the car via the key ring transmitter and the alarm goes off within 20 seconds without the doors locking. I then turn the ignition on and off and try again. Every once and awhile it locks and works perfectly. On one ccasion the alarm went off by itself. Checked the rear hatch switch and it seems ok as it catches when pushed in just a little.
One other problem. The central locking switch had never worked since I bought the car 2-1/2 years ago.
Any help would really be appreciated, especially with the locking problem.
Thanks
Tony

When my alarm was going off i changed the rear hatch switch and since then it's been fine. Just cause the switch looks fine doesn't mean it works correctly. That part costs like $7.95 at the dealership,i'd change it and if it still doesn't work your only loose 7 bucks. Thats just my 2 cents.

Open the remote up and make sure the encryption chip is fully plugged in. Mine goes bipolar if I drop it too many times and the chip pops part way out....
