I bought the car in Sep 2001, and owned it for the past 12 years.
Supercharged it in 2007, then in 2009 got a new Metric Mechanic M44 2.0 FI motor. I installed the motor but then sent the car to MM for Snow System installation, tuning, and dyno - as I couldn't get it running right myself.
Car was a monster and ridiculously fast when I got it back from MM.
Stock MK5 GTIs and E36 328s were a joke compared to it.
Drove well for about a year and a half, then on one particularly hard run, the timing slipped. The MM single timing chain which was on the car at the time was also damaged by the sprockets, and was replaced back with the OEM double timing chain.
For some reason I never got the car to run quite right afterwards.
It was still very quick, just with a lumpy idle and hesitation from time to time.
I was assured that mechanically, the engine was 100% though, by the shop that adjusted the timing and replaced the chain.
Long story short, I got tired of the whole ordeal and expense, and got myself back into a VAG in 2010, and never looked back.
318 was left & remained parked in my dads garage since Nov 2010.
Finally picked up the 318 last week, as my dad wanted it off his property, drove it from Fort Lee, NJ to my house in Monmouth County... 50 miles. Car drove very rough, but it never stalled, overheated, or died.
Washed it, cleaned it up, and now I'm putting it up for sale as a PARTS/ PROJECT car.
From what I noticed in the past few days:
Loud continuous squeal from the engine bay (most likely an aged belt or idler pulley - possibly a supercharger pulley, however unlikely).
Throttle body intake booth is pretty cracked up and thorn, which most likely contributes to the rough running (vacuum leak).
Brakes seem weak - long pedal.
Shifter is loose and sloppy - could use new linkage.
AC needs re-charging.
A/F gauge needs recalibrating or resetting.
ABS Light on (rear break sensor).
Airbag light on (aftermarket steering wheel).
Tires look good, but are in fact 4 years old and should be replaced, as I do not consider them safe based on sheer age.
Windshield chipped - needs replacing
Esthetically, it looks Ok for a 14 year old car. Far from perfect, but solid. It has 2 small cancer rust spots I noticed, easily mended.
It had a total of 3 recordable accidents in its life time, that I am aware of:
One before I owned it (not sure of extent of damage)
One fender bender in 2002 in Fort Lee (me)
One 180' backwards into a curb on some black ice (me)
Selling the car as a 'parts / project' car, as I don't wanna to deal with the hassle of having to get it to run right, before I sell it.
However, it is would be possible to get it to drive as it did once, assuming an investment into a solid tune up, timing adjustment, a few replacement parts as described as failing above, and most importantly a 'stand alone' engine management system which will sort out the A/F lean issue I believe the car is suffering from. If not, the sheer amount of choice parts will make it a gold mine for someone who is willing to take time and effort to part it out.
