Default BMW 1-series Hatchback

An article on the new BMW 1-series Hatchback 130i making references to E36 318ti.

http://www.bmwcca.org/members/AM/BMW...anuary2006.pdf

BMW NA claims they can't sell hatchbacks in the U.S. That's why they have no plan to ship the 130i hatchback to U.S. The article also indicated that E36 318ti eventually became something of a cult car among CCA members.

See what we are missing in the U.S.

the e46 318ti didnt make it here either. Germans get to enjoy bmw a lot more than we do. I got to drive the z4 and the 130i when I was in Germany(Army). I just rented the cars and tested them. They are both some sweet rides. Especially that Z4!

It doesn't need park distance control, and hates decadence. It is musclepacked, yet lightly wound. It lets you feel the asphalt and get you going with the smallest touch of the pedal. It provokes, seduces, and demands to be driven hard. It looks, sounds, and smells like performance.

BMW NA doesn't think we want hatchbacks. Just look at the success of the Mini.

I'd buy a 130ti in a heartbeat.

I'm with you weezer. I read that article about the 130d and it is almost as quick as an e36 M3 while getting mid 30s MPG. Sign me up, where do I get one. I think the real reason BMWNA is not interested in bringing over the 1 has more to do with them not wanting to let go of the margin they earn on the 3 series. Many buyers would migrate down to the cheaper 1 series and BMWNA margins are not as favorable.

Default 20% production

According to that article, the 1 series is expected to make up about 20% of BMW's global production(?). Could surpass the 3 series. The Japanese market is demanding more 1 series, I think BMWNA is really afraid of the 3 series, which is its biggest seller, getting competition from its own cousins.
Aside from that, BMWNA wouldn't know where to classify/categorize the car; If the 3 series is their compact market, where will the 1 series place.
Just like Nissan with its Maxima and Altima. Both midsize cars with same performance and engine and one is killing the other one.

Those things are all over the place in Germany... They also have several other hatchbacks, newer than the 318ti... For some reason few BMW's over there have the model # on them, so you don't always know what you are looking at.

No BMW diesels in the US. They can't get it past EPA regs.

I was looking at the x5 3.0d, because it gets between 30-35MPG depending on whom you ask. Alas, can't get it.

Default 1 Series in Canada

BMW Canada still keeps saying that the 1 series will show up as a 2007. I can only hope, I really want a 120d. There was a quick review of a 120d in this months Car & Driver. 0 - 60mph in 7.1 seconds with the automatic.

BMW NA doesn't believe in a entry level/Compact BMW less the 25K USD
