I believe 600 to 700 of the California Top were produced, so they are indeed rare. I worked for BMW during the time the 318ti Compact was sold new, and while there were several packages - some options were available separately. Toward the end of each model year (July/August) BMW regularly used what was already on hand, resulting in some color /options combinations never listed in the brochures....you may own one!

I don't own a TI, it's a European 316i and pretty much resembles the TI. Only real difference is that it's a 1.6l

I am not sure what my Ti is either. It is a 97 with an M/style bumper and side skirts. It has ASC. (Although it either isn't working or I cant figure it out.) No moon roof or cali top. It does have air and it is an automatic. No cruise. Don't know what kind of stereo it had. It didn't come with the factory stereo when I bought it. It also didn't come with any of the factory manuals. Any ideas?

Type in the VIN on www.realoem.com and it should tell you exactly what you have.

M bumpers would make it a sport, unless the last owner added those. does it have a black leather interior with cloth inserts in the seats and a black headliner? if it does it's probably a sport

sorry for the late reply, sounds like it's not a sport. if you have cruise control and the multi-function computer next to the radio it's an active package, if you have no cruise and just the plain digital clock you've got a base model

This is my 318ti Sport (in UK called or classed as a M sport)mine is also a indivdual sport which I think was only made at the end of the production of E36 Compacts in these limited edition colours there is also a red coloured version too but I cant remember the colour name but its this one in the small picture, but these colours are like a two colours in one mine goes from blue to green in the sun light and the red version goes from red to gold

Default 1996 California Edition

I think there should be one more model added to the "what ti do you own" thread for a total of 5 different models. We should include the “1996 California Edition” and here are some reasons why we should consider doing this.

In 1995 BMW introduced the Club Sport “model”, and for the one and only model year of 1995 they marketed it as the "318ti Club Sport Exclusive Edition", and then starting in 1996 all of the options that made the Club Sport unique and special, with the exception of the M-tech mirrors, were now available in the 1996 and later Sport models. Enthusiasts tend to recognize the first year of any new model and the Club Sport is no exception, even though it is really not much different than any of the 1996 and later production Sport models.

Now in 1996 BMW introduced another new model, the "318ti California Exclusive Edition" and for this model, BMW included the following options as standard, your “California Edition” came with the electric sliding canvas roof top, full body color bumpers and rocker panels, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 15x7 round spoke alloy wheels, Cruise control and the exterior color would either be painted in jet black or bright red, and as for options on this edition you could add all season traction control, an onboard computer, automatic transmission, leather upholstery and metallic paint in Aqua metallic, Arctic silver or Montreal blue.

In 1996 the only way to get the California top was to purchase your ti as the California Exclusive Edition, and similar to the 1995 Club Sport the previous year, the California Edition was manufactured for only the 1996 model year, and the following year in 1997 the California top now became an option that you could add on to any model. For the 1996 model year, the 318ti “California Exclusive Edition” was a stand-alone “model” from BMW that came with the California top as a key part of its overall package. BMW manufactured and advertised it as a stand-alone model and on an enthusiast forum we should treat it as a separate stand-alone 318ti “model”. What do you think?

New ti owner. whats the difference between base and active?
I have a canadian 1999 boston green ti. slicktop, cloth, came with 5 spokes.
Anyone know what diff ratio the canadian 99's got? tried checking the diff tag but its not visible. also not a lsd.
Will a 4.10 lsd from e30 318 fit directly?

96 318ti auto, regular sunroof, gray cloth, obc/clock, LSD. I think it's a base but I'm not 100% sure. Added m-roadster wheels and a cat back flowmaster.

I don't have a lot of pics due to just buying it a month ago but here's a little back story. BMW dealer auction here in nh had this car claiming it needed a motor cause it was locked up. My boss picked it up for $400 and when I saw it was a rust free, mint inside and out, 99k mile 96 ti, I had to have it! I owned a 97 ti brand new left over so it brought back my 18 year memories of the old m3 swap. Paid cost for the car, had a starter from my e30 new on the garage shelf, heli-coiled the thru bolt holes, welded in a thrust glass pack in place of the resonator, and flow master muffler. Crossed my fingers and started right up! No smoke, oil leaks, ticks or knocks. Putting off the m3 swap for a while now. Brake rotors were all rusty so the first drive quickly showed it had an LSD with a crooked two wheel peel and a ton of smoke. Tires were dry rotted so I had to dispose of them somehow.
