Hi guys. Within the first month of owning my TI, I managed to misplace the primary set of keys, the nice ones with the BMW button in the middle. It may be around the house, but I am almost 100% sure I lost them somewhere during my recent trip to Italy. I think they were in my shorts pocket when I left my house to go to the airport...and that is the last time I remember them. Anyway, my question is, have any of you ever needed to get a replacement key? If so, where did you get one and what was the cost? I found a few cheap ones on ebay for like 10 bucks plus shipping but I am not sure if I could just get that cut to match my key and it would work. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. __________________ -Brandon- | | | 08-26-2009, 06:59 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Why not give the dealer a call and find out? __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 08-26-2009, 08:40 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: New Jersey Posts: 93 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri Why not give the dealer a call and find out? | I looked into a dealer replacement and saw that the price was like 200 dollars. There are blank BMW keys all over ebay. I was wondering if I could simply buy one of these and get it cut to match or is there something more to a key than that. One listing mentioned something about codes that the key sends to the car computer. __________________ -Brandon- | | | 08-26-2009, 09:46 PM | #4 | That's not Millpoint Blue Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: BNA Posts: 3,161 | $200 is insane. The Nashville dealer sells them for less than $50. And yes, there's some top-secret magic that is exchanged between the key and car. That's why the dealer will require proof that you own the car when you order the key. __________________ Real men know how to SEARCH! I guess I am going to be spending some of my birthday money on a new key... __________________ -Brandon- | | | 08-26-2009, 11:08 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: US Posts: 315 | I just gota replacement key from BMW ANN ARBOR. Took couple days to make. | I just called Paul Miller BMW and they said that I could get the key with the little light in it for $80. The last person I talked to there said over $200, but she wasn't from the parts department. I will probably go through them, as they are close and the price is somewhat reasonable. __________________ -Brandon- | | | 09-06-2009, 05:17 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: Miami, FL Posts: 874 | Quote: Originally Posted by the awakening I just called Paul Miller BMW and they said that I could get the key with the little light in it for $80. At least that you can sync to your car without having to go through the dealer. __________________ -Brandon- | | | 09-08-2009, 02:53 AM | #12 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Plymouth Meeting, PA Posts: 56 | Quote: Originally Posted by the awakening Yea I am going to have to suck it up and buy one of those off ebay. The only place you can go and get a key is the dealer, that is if you want it to actually start the car. If you don't, you'll have to disable the immobilizer somehow. The keys for newer BMW's that have the remote built into the key, are very expensive. The basic black master keys aren't bad and the dealer will get them in a day or two. __________________ Philadelphia Region SCCA Autocross/Rallycross 97 M3ti 11 Jetta Sportwagen TDI 94 Mazda Miata R | | | 09-08-2009, 03:05 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I think you can just crack your old key open and get the EWS chip out of it, swap it into the new key and you're good to go | | | 09-08-2009, 03:20 AM | #14 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Plymouth Meeting, PA Posts: 56 | Well you could do that, but you'll still only have 1 working key. __________________ Philadelphia Region SCCA Autocross/Rallycross 97 M3ti 11 Jetta Sportwagen TDI 94 Mazda Miata R | | | 09-08-2009, 03:36 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | very true, that does defeat the purpose | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
