Default Differential Issues

Ok so heres the problem my differential is making a loud almost siren type noise so i went to my regular mechanic and he said that my differential is about shot so he started mocking up numbers of up to 1000$ for a used differntial and fo a rebuild in the area of 2.5 to 3 thousand dollars any suggestions as what i can possibly do to get a cheaper differential or just go ahead and get a used differential with a 6 month warranty?? Thank You in advance

Have you tried to put gear oil? Also, $1k for a used diff is way too much!

diffs usually don't go bad unless severely abused or if fluid is bad which are both related. Have you abused your car doing launches and trying to peel out?

i spent around 200 for my 3.73 lsd from an e30. Then spent around 400 rebuilding the internals with bigger, beefier parts that increase the lock up. well worth it especially if you have a swap. Also just bought a solid diff bushing.

Agreed- I regularly see used, open differentials for $150-250 and LSD's for $300-500.

$2,500-3,000 for a rebuild? Last time I checked, you could still get them brand new from BMW for just a little over $2k.

I picked up a brand-spankin' new small-case LSD from some guy on the r3vlimited forums earlier this year for $550. If you can afford the time, keep looking- there are deals out there...

True, the differential itself rarely goes bad unless you beat on it or it was incorrectly installed, but I have had more than one pinion bearing prematurely fail on vehicles that were regularly serviced, never abused, and didn't have excessive mileage.

If the e30 is an IS model. I'd steal that from it if I were you. Id go to advance auto parts and get brand new e30 axles if its a 6cy diff. I just torqued an older axle on my car and went to advance to get brand new axles. Good deal.
