Does anyone know where aor can recommend a way to get my hands on a stock 3.45 or 3.73 L/S differential for my stock 1998 318ti? | | | 10-21-2013, 08:03 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | you'll either need to find one from an E30 along with its halfshafts or one from a 95 ti __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | 10-22-2013, 12:36 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: San antonio, tx Posts: 135 | if you do not get a direct response on this or other bmw forums, call dan at www.diffsonline.com he is a recognized expert on bmw differentials and can give you some information about availability. he does sell a ls clutch kit for the small case differential, but you would have to check with him on the desired ratios. good luck | | | 10-22-2013, 02:39 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | car-part.com. Search 1995 318i "carrier". That should bring up a list of all ratios for 95 318 models, pick "Htbk (ti), MT (3.45 ratio), locking". If you see a possibility call/email the yard and request pictures of the housing and tag on the cover. Look for an 'S' stamped on the housing or S3.45 on the tag. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-24-2013, 01:31 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 1,464 | Don't the Z3 1.9 168mm diffs. fit our cars as well? __________________ 1995 318ti Base - Cosmosschwarz/Sandgrau R.I.P. 1997 318ti Active - Alpinweiß III/Sandgrau 2013 328i Coupe - Le Mans Blau | | | 10-24-2013, 04:01 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: SoCal Posts: 702 | Quote: Originally Posted by zoner Don't the Z3 1.9 168mm diffs. fit our cars as well? | Yup perfect fit, What you can look into also is the later model 6cyl auto z3 diffs. You would also have to use e30 halfshafts since its a medium case, but they are 3.46 Torsion LSD - not clutch type so it won't wear out. Now if your into autox, track, drift and for some reason you prefer clutch type over torsion type LSD that will be up to you. But they are easier to find then small case 3.46 LSD diffs and should work well, I have one at home I hope to put on in the next month. __________________ ***328ti Build thread. *** Even more important: SUPPORT 318ti.org! I guess I should lean towards putting in a medium size Diff since eventually I want to put a turbo on the engine and pump up the HP. We are using the ti for autox and eventually for track for driving school so I think the clutch Diff is the way to go but will research the differences and pros/cons of each. What are the groups thoughts? | | | 10-29-2013, 04:49 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: SoCal Posts: 702 | Quote: Originally Posted by pvansickler Thanks for the input. What are the groups thoughts? | I was with a clutch type now going to torsion, so I should be able to tell you what I think once I decide to take it for a good drive - I am using torsion now mainly because the car is daily driven and I don't have to worry about wearing of clutch packs. They act different from each other and best would be to drive both and see what suits your needs. Also going medium size diff will give you much more options. Check out: http://www.bimmerdiffs.com/ for good prices and parts for rebuilding clutchpacks and going from the stock 25% lock to 40% - I think he is also on the forums here. Good luck. __________________ ***328ti Build thread. *** Even more important: SUPPORT 318ti.org! CLICK THE LINK ABOVE! Good luck. | Good information on the source of rebuild parts for 25% LSD. Thanks. I have been wanting to ask for vendors for LSD rebuild parts so I can rebuild mine. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 10-31-2013, 09:46 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Aug 2012 Location: Catonsville, MD Posts: 90 | What about putting in a E36 M3 Diff? I am guessing that is L/S and is beefier than the stock ti diff and will hold up better when I pump up the motor.
