For awhile I've been hearing a "swirling" noise when the clutch is engaged. I took it to my mechanic and the diagnosis came back as a throw-out bearing. They will replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, and pressure place for $950. Is this a good price? Parts run around $300, and they're billing me for 8 hours of labor. For added kicks, I'll have the fly-wheel re-surfaced (hollow-ground) and balanced for another 50-60$. Thanks- M | | | 06-09-2006, 01:24 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Jun 2004 Location: FT LUADERDALE, FL Posts: 91 | i think i have the same problem. i hear a noise when pressing in the clutch pedal but i want to change it out myself. and since o dont have the cash for the ltw flywheel and m5 clutch i just want to put in a regular clutch. so now the question is do i have to have the flywheel resurfaced and balanced or can i just put in the clutch? what does the resurfacing and balancing do and is it needed? __________________ Specs: M-Technic Front/Rear, M3 Side Skirts & Mirrors, MS Roof Wing, Euro Tail Lights, Projector Signals, ADR M Sport 18x8.5, H&R Sport Springs, Bilstien Sport Shocks, E46 M3 Rear Shock Mounts, M Roadster Rear Shock Mount Plates, Momo Shift Knob, Bavauto 8mm Perf Wires, K&N Cone Filter, Stainless Steel Brake Lines, Cross Drilled Rotors, 20 Piece Carbon Fiber Dash Kit, NR White Guage Face, X-Brace, BMP Strut Tower Brace, UUC stage 2 flywheel, and SS clutch line | | | 06-09-2006, 02:57 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Norfolk, Virginia Posts: 289 | I dunno about the price. I got a Sachs clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, and an oil service for $650. AFTER LABOR. Which was only 4 hours. __________________ _____________________________________________ Cold air, Dual Exhaust, Ellipsoid headlights, CCFL Angel Eyes, custom ICE, M3 wheels, Cobra Radar Detector, CF eyebrows, ACS CF gauge bezel, clear corners, Euro tail lights. I was told the fly wheel can NOT be resurfaced. Any advise? no noises at all, just time for a new (stock) clutch. josh __________________ [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] | | | 06-20-2006, 06:53 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Cincinnati Posts: 890 | They make more money if you buy a new flywheel instead of just resurfacing yours... __________________ SOLD!!! 1999 332ti //M Sport Titanium Silver M3 S52 3.2 I-6 Engine, M3 Clutch w/ ti Getrag Trans, Z3 3.15 LSD medium case diff and half shafts, OEM Hatch Spoiler, Eurosport HP Underdrive Pulleys, FDM, 17" DS1 rims, M3 Front Struts & Springs, M3 Instrument Cluster, 3-spoke //M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, SSK, CCFL Angels in Depo projectors with 5k HIDs | | | 06-20-2006, 07:01 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Why not do it yourself and save the extra 8 hours of money on something else? __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 06-20-2006, 07:44 PM | #9 | Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Minnesota Posts: 41 | Dude, don't mess with the clutch if you're not comfortable with it (or if you'd rather devote 8 hours of your time to other things). Bad things can happen and even worse noises can result, I've seen it. The price is good for having a BMW shop do the work. | | | 06-20-2006, 07:57 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Quote: Originally Posted by mnbimmerchic Dude, don't mess with the clutch if you're not comfortable with it (or if you'd rather devote 8 hours of your time to other things). I was well pleased with that price as i was expecting 400. It was from an independent garage and not a specialist or main dealer. BUT, as 1uvakind said about being pnoid, i really trust this garage and so they can do all of the work on my car. The guy who works on my car has been a mate for 18months and was one of the only other people i trusted to drive my previous Bee Em. Sometimes the independents are much better than the dealers, its down to personal experience. My tuppence worth!!! It has gotten worse, but very slowly. I won't worry about it until it starts to effect drivability or get loud enough to be embarrasing. Like my brakes that used to squeal until I gave in and replaced them all because pedestrians and other drivers actually started to make fun of me, there was nothing wrong with them per se, just the rotors were wearing thin and the pads were the squealing variety regardless of how clean or how much anti-squeal I used. | | | 06-26-2006, 12:28 AM | #13 | Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Columbus, Ohio Posts: 78 | I've found a new garage here in Columbus that comes highly reconmended. I called Kelly BMW and they quoted $840 with no resurfacing, the reconmended shop is quoted $750 with resurfacing. Tommorow they'll give an accurate assement, we'll see how good they aer with the numbers. | | | 06-26-2006, 06:13 PM | #14 | Member Join Date: Jun 2004 Location: FT LUADERDALE, FL Posts: 91 | well it finally died and i have to change out the clutch. so guys i ordered some parts today and ill finish ordering the rest by the end of the week. im going with the uuc stage 2 flywheel and m5 clutch option. i'll be doing the work myself or if i could put together another $400 after buying the parts i may take it to a shop ( I really think ill do it myself tho) anyway from the write up it looks really easy and i really feel as if i could accomplish the job myself. wish me luck. __________________ Specs: M-Technic Front/Rear, M3 Side Skirts & Mirrors, MS Roof Wing, Euro Tail Lights, Projector Signals, ADR M Sport 18x8.5, H&R Sport Springs, Bilstien Sport Shocks, E46 M3 Rear Shock Mounts, M Roadster Rear Shock Mount Plates, Momo Shift Knob, Bavauto 8mm Perf Wires, K&N Cone Filter, Stainless Steel Brake Lines, Cross Drilled Rotors, 20 Piece Carbon Fiber Dash Kit, NR White Guage Face, X-Brace, BMP Strut Tower Brace, UUC stage 2 flywheel, and SS clutch line | | | 06-26-2006, 06:16 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | good luck, im pretty sure you can do it. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
