Default Clutch Job

At 138k miles it's time for a new clutch. For awhile I've been hearing a "swirling" noise when the clutch is engaged. I took it to my mechanic and the diagnosis came back as a throw-out bearing. They will replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, and pressure place for $950. Is this a good price? Parts run around $300, and they're billing me for 8 hours of labor. For added kicks, I'll have the fly-wheel re-surfaced (hollow-ground) and balanced for another 50-60$.
Thanks-
M

i think i have the same problem. i hear a noise when pressing in the clutch pedal but i want to change it out myself. and since o dont have the cash for the ltw flywheel and m5 clutch i just want to put in a regular clutch. so now the question is do i have to have the flywheel resurfaced and balanced or can i just put in the clutch? what does the resurfacing and balancing do and is it needed?

I dunno about the price.
I got a Sachs clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, and an oil service
for $650. AFTER LABOR. Which was only 4 hours.

that is a good price but im a little sceptical about having a shop do work on the car unless its major. i like to do the work myself if i can. plus i worry about them not changing all the parts they say thier going to change. call me Pnoid if you want. by the way are the things i mentioned in my last post neccesary?

keep in mind i'm going to a BMW shop, and not a regular garage.
the driving isn't affected, but the noise is getting old.

I was just quoted $650 for the job, 4 hours labor.
I was told the fly wheel can NOT be resurfaced.
Any advise?
no noises at all, just time for a new (stock) clutch.

They make more money if you buy a new flywheel instead of just resurfacing yours...

Why not do it yourself and save the extra 8 hours of money on something else?

Dude, don't mess with the clutch if you're not comfortable with it (or if you'd rather devote 8 hours of your time to other things). Bad things can happen and even worse noises can result, I've seen it. The price is good for having a BMW shop do the work.

I got my clutch / release bearing / pressure plate replaced for £300. I was well pleased with that price as i was expecting 400.

It was from an independent garage and not a specialist or main dealer. BUT, as 1uvakind said about being pnoid, i really trust this garage and so they can do all of the work on my car. The guy who works on my car has been a mate for 18months and was one of the only other people i trusted to drive my previous Bee Em.

Sometimes the independents are much better than the dealers, its down to personal experience.

My tuppence worth!!!

My throwout bearing has been making noises for at least 20k miles (since I bought the car). It has gotten worse, but very slowly. I won't worry about it until it starts to effect drivability or get loud enough to be embarrasing. Like my brakes that used to squeal until I gave in and replaced them all because pedestrians and other drivers actually started to make fun of me, there was nothing wrong with them per se, just the rotors were wearing thin and the pads were the squealing variety regardless of how clean or how much anti-squeal I used.

I've found a new garage here in Columbus that comes highly reconmended. I called Kelly BMW and they quoted $840 with no resurfacing, the reconmended shop is quoted $750 with resurfacing. Tommorow they'll give an accurate assement, we'll see how good they aer with the numbers.

well it finally died and i have to change out the clutch.
so guys i ordered some parts today and ill finish ordering the rest by the end of the week. im going with the uuc stage 2 flywheel and m5 clutch option. i'll be doing the work myself or if i could put together another $400 after buying the parts i may take it to a shop ( I really think ill do it myself tho) anyway from the write up it looks really easy and i really feel as if i could accomplish the job myself. wish me luck.
