I switched to a mac about 3 years ago. I can say I never want a PC again.

I have had much better luck with Macs than PCs when setting up such things. To save time, I will often first set up the Mac to confirm I have been given all the required details, and then go at it on the PC. For example, I recently had to get this Vista-running notebook on to a company VPN. That took something like your canonical two minutes on my seven year old Pismo running Panther (OSX 10.3). It then took me over an hour to convince Vista to repeat the performance. I can't remember the niggling snags other than they demonstrated some parts of Vista are still at the beta test stage (and that may be generous).

What's the start-up time on that Eee? I saw ads online and thought it might be a good start for a simple in-car computer system (my interest is mostly in playing music, rather than in-car gaming and movies). You wouldn't need much, just need an external LCD touchscreen, audio connections and power to it.

its not too long, bout 1 or 2 mins

i installed another version of linux, so it takes longer for me, but if you find programs that will work with linux for playing music, and drivers for linux for the touch screen and do a little work converting plugs to go to a radio or whatever, im sure it could be done, and the best thing about the eee pc is that its only like a 7" screen, so its super portable

heres a link with some info:

Hmmm... interesting... I thought it would be faster than that due to it using a "solid state disk" rather than a traditional hard drive. I'm sure the start time varies depending on what you have loading at boot time though. In fact, the Wikipedia entry states that it boots in 20-22 seconds.

Anyway... I'll stop dragging this thread off-topic now.

WORD! Bringin it back from the dead!

I have two IBM Thinkpads and love them. One XP and one Vista x64. Never had any problems. Play all my apps and games when I want. All my friends have macs and I just don't really get the appeal of them. Never really liked them. Just my .02 though.
