Posts: 94 | Gas gauge gone nutty, Advice please I just bought this TI and I filled the tank when I got it two weeks ago, There have been no issues until last night, I was at 1/4 tank and it would read 99 miles to go on the display, I had to drive to work for an emergency power outage and it was raining pretty good, Only 5 mile drive, A couple hours later I drive the 5 miles home now in a drizzle and when I pulled in the drive way I noticed that the fuel gauge was reading nearly 3/4 tank and reading that I could go another 150+ miles,,, So something had gone wacky with the fuel gauge system. Where would I look first? I am assuming a connector somewhere is getting wet and causing this issue, But being new to BMW I really have no idea where to look first. Thanks for any advice you may have, And yes there is about 275 miles on this tank so I know it's not at 3/4. Thanks ! ! ! ! Try pushing in the instrument cluster next to the odo reset button, if that clears it up there is a bad connection in the instrument panel. If that doesn't do it, the gas tank float wiring is under the back seat, look to see if it is pinched or wet. | | | 07-19-2012, 09:52 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Roanoke, Va Posts: 1 | bmvw mine is doing the same thing and pressing by the reset button makes the needle move. Where do I look for the bad connection in the cluster and do you know if the wheel needs to come off to remove it? Thanks. | | | 07-20-2012, 05:36 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2010 Location: Wichita Falls, Texas Posts: 1,364 | Try running a can or two of Chevron Techtron gas additive though the fuel system. I think you have a corroded sensor connections in the gas tank. I had the same problem in my Z3. The Techtron certainly won't hurt anything and it fixed my Z3. | | | 07-22-2012, 08:03 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: San Diego Posts: 231 | I've not done it, I just live with it because the low fuel quantity light still works. There's some DIYs on this site as to the instrument cluster, I know it's not a trivial job. If you do take off the steering wheel, there are a couple common problems to look for while you're in there, one is the lock cylinder and the other is the steer gearing which can get squeaky. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
