Default That darn speed sensor -

Hey there, newbie here - just bought a '98 318 TI this past Sat... this is Monday so it's new to me -- wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else - my speedo and odometer were out when I bought the car - looking underneath the car at the speed sensor on the back of the diff - noticed the spare tire cage (or whatever you call it) had broken the sensor, apparently when the tire was raised back to it's normal location, the back side of the tire holder caught the speedo sensor - anyway off to BMW parts place tomorrow - hope it fixes it - ran some instrument cluster test I read somewhere, so I believe the cluster is good - thanks - Mike

Went to the local BMW dealership today - had the RealOEM printout - guy said the truck comes in on Thursday and the sensor with new O ring were only $35.00 -- I was worried about the instrument cluster being bad - can't remember in my googling if it was this forum or another but found the test for the cluster -- this might be posted many times but just in case - thought I'd share -

Test the Cluster -

Get in the car and insert key - do NOT turn on
Press and hold the Odometer reset
Turn Key to first position -
Release Odometer reset button when you see something like "Test 101"
A bunch of numbers will be displayed, along with the instruments moving to their highest and then back to their lowest - if the speedo doesn't move - then the cluster is likely bad -

Not sure where I copied this from cause I've been going like crazy learning about my new TI - but my cluster passed the test - Thanks to whoever posted the test and I apologize for not giving recognition -

now to replace the sensor and I'll report back - thanks Mike
