Default Seat Belt Question

Hi everyone, I am new to the bmw world, and absolutely love my my '96 318ti I bought a few months ago.

I recently came across a little problem that I need to repair fast. I signed up for a track even coming up pretty soon at Mid-Ohio to test the 318 out. But when I went to tear some turns up the other day I found out that the seat belt locking mechanism on the drivers side doesn't lock. For a cheap way to hold me into the seat in past cars I've always pulled the seat belt all the way out to its max extension and then just pulled it tight against me so it was locked. My passenger seat belt does this but not the drivers seat. I was wondering if anyone has every had this happen and what they did to fix it. I figured I would throw the question out there before I pulled it apart and looked for a possible replacement.

Thanks

Do you mean the latch on the right does not clip? or itr doesn't retract? or the retract does not lock?

By the way, welcome to the group... I work in Cincinnati

no the latch on the right works fine. but when you pull the seatbelt all the way out to it maximum it's supposed to start clicking and locks wherever it is until it is released and allowed to go all the way back in. mine isn't doing this for some reason.

Alright thanks for the info. I guess i'll just try it out and see how it goes. Do you just autocross or do you run any road courses?

Get your seating position right so the lap belt goes across your hips (not stomach). Hold the lap belt out and a little forward with your left hand, pull tight across your chest with your left.

Fixed^^^
+1 this is absolutely correct. You'ld be surprised how many people don't properly strap themselves in. I used to be a cop in Europe and I responded to an average of 3 accidents a day for over 5 years. Most injuries could have been avoided by following aceyx's advice.

bavauto sells a clamp-type thing that will lock your seatbelt in place, it's made by a company called G-Force or something, I'm too lazy to check right now
