Default 1996 325ti Autocross Monster

1996 325ti Autocross Monster

Selling only because I don’t use it enough. It’s been fun to build and fun to drive. It’s time for someone to get some real miles and track time on this thing!

Originally a 318ti, black on black, with rare M-sport package. M-package included upgraded body trim details and excellent cloth-and-leather sport seats with adjustable thigh bolsters. First owner enjoyed it in stock form and was meticulous with records. Second owner transformed it into a very competitive autocross machine. Extensive records from previous two owners and me. Clean carfax. Ideally I’d like to sell this as a package deal with all of the spares listed below (twin-screw supercharger, S52, transmissions, diffs, etc.).

My sloppy driving: http://youtu.be/Y9zWwhTv-Ps
Pix: https://drive.google.com/folderview?...FVQUjA&usp=sha ring

I bought it with from a gent in Maryland. Had 188k and a bad knock in the original M44 1.8L engine. Perfect M3 S52 3.2L motor swap candidate. My donor car ended up being a track-prepped, no-expense-spared 325is, hence the 2.5 liter motor. With the Dinan chip, exhaust, etc., power is close to the S52 anyway. Plenty for this car!

Combining the best of both cars, the result is an autocross monster. Driven with only average skill, this car is among the fastest on any given race day. A skilled driver has a reasonable shot at the fastest time of the day – competing against dedicated race cars; and unlike most of the cars this competes against, you can drive it home. Which brings up another key feature: the hatchback swallows the race wheels, jack, etc., with room to spare. Plenty of room for a dog or three on non-race-days.

Gearing with the installed 4.10 LSD is relatively low. About 4400 RPM at 75mph. Effect is to have more gear choices in typical autocross courses. I usually start from second just to avoid burnouts, even with the LSD.

Cosmetically, interior and exterior, it’s OK, presentable but not perfect. Mechanically it’s excellent – that’s been the point of the car. Some touch-ups and a good buffing would make the paint shine like new.

Parts listed as “new” were installed two years ago by me, and have seen little use.

Suspension / chassis:

Z3M trailing arms with new bushings
Z3M rear subframe with Ireland Engineering adjustable camber/toe kit
Hotchkiss adjustable front sway bar, polyurethane bushings
Koni adjustable coilovers front, using M3 lowers
Vorschlag strut mounts – easily adjust camber on race day
Mason Engineering welded aluminum strut bar
New Meyle M3 control arms – installed May 2014
Solid polyurethane offset control arm bushings, lollipops
M3 subframe cross brace
newer tie rod ends
new sway bar end links
Koni Yellow rear shocks
Adjustable height spring perches rear
No rear sway bar installed. Stock included separately
Front and rear springs were purchased after everything else set. Could look up details if necessary.

Brakes:

M3 front with European floating rotors
M3 rear calipers and rotors; Z3M calipers included (different brake line routing option, but easier to bleed)
Hawk HP Plus brake pads all around – Great for autocross, fine for street
SST lines all around

Wheels/tires

17 x 9 wheels, square setup
Front uses 15mm spacers
Fuzion ZRi 255/40 ZR17 tires with lots of tread
Three wheels missing center caps; some corrosion

Drivetrain

2.5L M50tu (OBD1), 144k; runs great, no issues
Well maintained with oil changes, plugs, belts, etc.
Dinan chip, 220 HP
325is cluster
Getrag tranny, same mileage, excellent condition and shifting
Medium case 4.10 LSD, 40% lock, from E30 M3
Mishimoto all-aluminum radiator
New hoses
New M3 motor mounts
New guibo, aka driveshaft flex disk
New transmission mounts
Short shifter, new bushings all over
ZHP weighted shift knob
S52 welded tube headers
cooling fan delete mod -- no issues
Borla muffler, sounds fantastic
M3 cats / midpipe
Custom connecting section
Clutch stop
Newer battery
Cold air intake oversized filter
No CEL... it's not hooked up

Body

Approximately 192k on body, though most things mechanical have been replaced and/or upgraded
Black headliner, replaced sagging original one
Almost no rust showing on body. Less than dime-size bubble that has been fixed.
White front corners, stock tail lights
Window regulators replaced
Harness for driver’s side (lap belt not currently installed)
Some minor small dents, nothing distracting, all easily fixed with paintless dent removal if desired
All fenders are very rolled to accommodate wider tires
Rear bumper lower trim piece not installed, but is included (uncut). Car looks the part without this in place.
A/C not installed -- all parts included
No rear deck; front fender liners and brake ducts not there

Whoever buys the car gets first dibs on the following:

Race wheel setup: Kosei K1, 17x8.5, BFG R1-S slicks, 255/40 r17. Bought with "minimum 75% left", and used for three AX events since
Twin screw supercharger partial kit: have CAD files for all, but intake manifold, inlet air duct, and nose bracket would need to be fabricated and random smaller parts sourced. Included: Supercharger, as new, no signs of use; correct snout; assortment of pulleys; the tune (obd1 chip); injectors; Laminova intercoolers; etc. When complete, comparable to http://www.activeautowerke.com/pdf/product17.pdf
S52, partially disassembled: removed from a good running M3, automatic trans, 100k miles. Gasket kit for head gasket replacement will be included. Beisan vanos rebuild kit included as well. OBD2 harness has a couple of things cut but could be repaired.
Supersprint-knockoff long tube headers
Differentials: 4.10 LSD from E30 M3, needs input bearing; an M3 3.23, wrong casing for this car but internals would swap over; and another
Good spare Getrag transmission from the 325is
ZF transmission swap kit from an M3, including good used tranny, shift linkage and driveshaft
UUC flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, excellent condition -- great upgrade for the S52 install
Good used stock M3 clutch/flywheel/pressure plate
Bilstein HD front struts, H&R springs, KMAC camber plates; rear shocks and springs to match
Plus a ton of other smaller things

I'd like to sell everything for $10k, reasonable considering the tons of pricey upgrades. With the S52, SC kit, race wheels, etc, this should be a quick sale!

Sure. Would you need the whole thing, or just the "guts"? what's your email, so I can send a pic? What do you think it's worth (shipping would be USPS)?

Where are you located in the state? I'd like to try and get some detail exhaust shots to have mine fabricated.

I'm in western mass and by appearance of garage in your google drive it looks like greater Boston. But you say the sticks...

I'm in Northampton. PM me your email address and I'll send you a pic or two.

Basically I used the donor 325is's Borla muffler and associated exhaust hangers; the m3 midpipe; and drove it to a local exhaust shop and they filled in the in-between section. $200 or so. Not mandrel-bent but no significant restrictions.

Bump!

A/C installed; brake ducts/pork chops/both fender liners in; M3 control arm bushings in (less harsh than solid urethane); found one door vapor barrier missing, so fixed that, and all door panel clips/fasteners in and good; kidney grilles refinished; headlights polished; what else...

open to offers!
