You can read up a little in the exhaust section.

IF theres nothing wrong with your exhaust, except its just welded on wrong, most muffler shops can fix that. It shouldnt cost more than $10-$15, maybe $25 if theyre tight asses. They'd just torch it off then weld it back on. No sense in buying a new one if your current one is good. And welcome to the site, you'll learn a lot here. I already have.

That is a good point. Don't think you must go to a BMW place to get the work done. I had a shop charge me an arm and a leg who primarily work on Porsche and BMW. A couple years later I found another guy who did the work at a fraction of the cost and lasted a longer time. Where in MD are you? Maybe I can give you some advice.

I live in Salisbury, md bout 30 mins from OC. I have friends who run a Performance shop in Berlin, md but i dont want to bother them with my "girlish" car issues

Any advice is much appreciated.

about every 4 years / 75k miles i need a new can. rather than forking over several hundred for a stocker or aftermarket, i just cut the old one off with a sawzall and weld on a $34 generic muffler.

it's pretty ghetto, but anybody that gives me crap about my muffler needs a life.

shifting

I went from a VW Scirocco to my 1998 318ti. Seems there is a kinship between VW cars and 318ti cars.

If you need a muffler, I have a low mileage stock system that I removed from my car. It only had about 35K miles on it.
