Now that the temperatures are dropping, its got me thinking about my winter tires.

When do you all suggest changing over from summer to winter shoes?

i'd just make sure they're all studded snows if you're going to drive it in the winter. i run 195/65-15's with 4 studded hankook snows. not the best tire, but they're studded and have been good so far.

Studded tires are verboten in the great state of Illinois, so I use Blizzak WS-50's. I change mine the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Well in maryland we CAN get alot of snow, but usually we dont. So i need a tire that is excellent in the cold dry even moreso than snow. Last winter we got nailed hardcore but since that is fairly infrequent, i went for stock width on tires that can handle good speed for when there isnt the white stuff. 205/60/15 Pilot Alpins. What do you think?

I would try the Alpins next.

I have Blizaks and they are great in the snow providing I have some ground clearance. I actually did better in my parking lot than my neighbor in his SUV. The bad news was that they suck on dry. Very squirmy.

I went with the Pilot Alpins instead of the Arctic Alpins. The Pilot Alpins were the only snow tires ive seen with an H rating. The rest were Qs in that size.

The Blizzaks ARE squirmy. I was very glad to take 'em off this spring.

It's a different sort of fun to out perform some of the SUV's that I imagine are just waiting for winter for justification. There's nothing like that 5:00 A.M. 70mph blast down 50 miles of fast lane, leaving the first tracks in 3 or 4 inches of snow.

I'd still like an '87 325ix - black, 2-door, you know the one...
