I joined because I'm considering buying my coworker's ti. It's a '96 with 240K miles, 5 speed, I believe an "Active" model based on this post because it's got alloys & sunroof. He's owned it as long as I've known him, and we've worked together for 10+ years. It needs a clutch, but I can do that myself, unless there's something tricky about it (I'm reading the Pelican Clutch how-to now). He just replaced a leaky valve cover gasket and he said the tires are recent. I don't know much more, I just found out yesterday it was for sale. He was going to put it on C/L for $1K, said he'd sell it to me for less. I'm assuming I could pick it up for $700-$800. The mileage scares me a bit, but his long history with the car is a plus. He's said before it's been very reliable. Is that sound like a good deal? I read the sticky thread and I'll ask about the windows, recalls & plastic cooling system parts. What else would scare you away from this car at that price? Thanks! Last edited by salguod; 09-24-2015 at 10:57 PM. - Got new front control arms at some point and new shocks about a year ago. No other suspension work.
- Sunroof is inoperable, or at least he stopped using it when he heard a scrape sound and got a scratch in it. He closed it up and left it that way for fear that it wouldn't close again.
He threw out a price of $500. With the clutch parts, I'd have about a grand in it. | | | 09-17-2015, 05:51 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2013 Location: Ithaca, NY, USA Posts: 147 | As long as it's not too rusted, go for it. You won't get a better car for that kind of money. | | | 09-17-2015, 07:27 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Sep 2015 Location: Columbus, OH Posts: 91 | That's what I'm thinking. The question is do I need another car right now? | | | 09-17-2015, 10:59 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: May 2015 Location: Carnation Posts: 44 | Yes. The clutch symptoms he mentioned don't sound like a bad clutch. He said it doesn't slip, but in 1st gear at full throttle it'll buck hard. Normal throttle and in other gears, no problems. Maybe a bad motor mount? Since he bought it at 70K and it's now at 240K, I assume that he put a clutch in it at some point, so I need to find out when. | | | 09-22-2015, 06:13 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Horseheads, NY Posts: 259 | Maybe the center bearing in the driveshaft? Mine is doing the same thing and that is what cured it before. | | | 09-22-2015, 09:55 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Sep 2015 Location: Columbus, OH Posts: 91 | He says he's never put a clutch in it. Is 240K on the original possible? If so, I ought to expect to put a clutch in it soon, I'd think. | | | 09-23-2015, 05:09 AM | #11 | Member Join Date: Sep 2015 Location: Columbus, OH Posts: 91 | Saw it tonight. Clutch felt fine, didn't buck hard, maybe a little. Friction point wasn't even too high. A bit of rust in each quarter and a spot on the RF fender, mostly looked like it wasn't through. AC doesn't work, radio display doesn't work, parking brake doesn't work, tear in the driver's seat and headliner is starting to sag. But, ran well, felt tight and generally felt pretty good. Probably going to go for it. I'll have it home after work tomorrow. I've got a folder full of receipts gong back to 70K, but he said he got a bit lax in the last few years. I'll post some pics when I get them. Pretty excited about it. | | | 09-25-2015, 06:15 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2014 Location: Georgia Posts: 118 | Congratulations on becoming a Ti owner, looking forward to the pics | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
