For how easy it is remove, you would really just be wasting time doing it installed.

I've done two diy headliners, my ti and my wife's mini-van. Bought the fabric from a fabric store which had a nice selection of colors and shades to choose from. Got very close matches to oem, close enough for me, anyway.

I was planning on going to a JoAnn's to look for a fabric. Is there a specific "headliner material", or do I bring the original material and try to find a match?

It seems it's a light fleece-type material. Is it possible to use other fabrics (cotton prints/perforated pleather)? Trying to match the thickness seems smart, is weight involved as well?

I would never attempt that with the messy residue from all the cleaning to begin with. Then the over spray from spraying the adhesive.

That's just two of the basic reasons not to attempt with the headliner still in place. There are many more functional reasons you need to take it out to accomplish this task.
